As I was just now noticing that some of the kids in these photos weren't wearing shoes, I remembered my dad telling me that, when he first arrived at USMC boot camp at Parris Island in 1941, a good many of the enlistees were just receiving their first pairs of shoes.

1864 Union soldiers building fortifications in Decatur, AL. The State Bank building is seen in the background, one of only three buildings in the town left standing. Rather than burning the buildings after Union forces gained control, the buildings were torn down and the materials saved for construction elsewhere.

The bank as it stands today.
