Early in Bess & Harry's marriage he failed miserably at farming. He probably thought those mules were plough horses or maybe Clydesdales.

Spitting all over the place was a huge habit of Americans in the late 1800s and early 1900s, especially because peole smoked chewed tobacco. Health advocates really made an all out effort to train people not to spit so much around that time.

Laws abounded around many jurisdictions at one time and probably still exist in some in regards to public expectoration. Have no recollection of ever enforcing such a law but have heard of elevator interrogations occurring when someone allegedly spat on or at an officer.
