Those of us of a certain age might remember long road trips with friends, all of whom were expected to pitch in for gas. And maybe push the car to compression start it when the old battery went dead. And napping as best you could on a hot summer afternoon in the back seat of a car without air-conditioning. And any number of other hardships that were hardly hardships.

We’ve gone soft.

The beauty of traveling was ruined for me by the fact that I have all the money I could need, but no time to go anywhere with it.

Ran into an elegant old gentleman in my travels who said something that I keep thinking about. He said “As I continue to travel, I now find myself in a race to see which runs out first, my money or my time. I fear it will be my time.”

Just heard about this: A bar in phoenix that goes to great lengths to simulate a first class 747 flight experience in the early 1970s. You buy a ticket to get in, and the bar is a reproduction of the upstairs lounge of a 747. The ticket is for a 90 minute “flight” and you can watch the flights progress when you look out the widows. Vintage cocktails are served by flight attendants.

The average working-class American man of the 20th century did his only real traveling courtesy of the Armed Forces.

I learned this today. We don’t hear this talked about much. Only that the younger generations complain about how they are unable to afford a house on a dual-income salary as compared to earlier generations’ one-income salary.

Of course, I support this. And I think we at the Fedora Lounge have been saying this for years. When flying, dress with respect and always say please and thank you.

There is plenty of room for skepticism about the efficacy of such campaigns, but —then again— it sure can’t hurt.
