Really nice, Randall.

VERY unique!!!!! Nice one, Randall!
Thanks, fellas!

Hey, Joe, can you look at this hat again and let me know if you think this is a Pre-Stetson Fedora? The liner logo can’t be read to make out whether it’s 1823 or 1817, but the style and colors are indicative of ones I’ve seen from 1823. The fact that it’s a Twelve Fifty makes me question that assertion, but should it??
And finally, what should the label look like to tell me whether a Mallory is pre, or post?

Heading into the Memorial Day holiday weekend with one of my favorite Open Roads. Super soft 3x and long oval... this hat just floats perfectly into place. One of the most comfortable hats I have

I got to feeling guilty after my last post declaring my affection for one particular Open Road. As I walked by the wall, the others sent out a " What about us? " vibe. so here we go... the other Open Roads... I DO love them all. I even have a couple still sporting their original Cattlemans crease

so heres the whole family.. Some are nicer than others, but no one feels left out now

I can’t make out the 1823 or 1817 text either. It really is one of the biggest tell tail signs of pre and post ‘46 as it’s not like there were other immediate manufacturing changes. In my opinion Mallory factory ran independent of Stetson manufacturing for almost a good decade after the merger…. I’m sure there were influences and cost control measures implemented by the new owners, but it’s not like the Mallory production was immediately absorbed into the Stetson lines in the way we see with HCA production as they acquired brands.

That fabric coating on the reeding might indicate a bit earlier of a hat. But that’s just a guess.

I wouldn’t let the twelve fifty throw you too much. I believe Dobbs GP of this era were mostly $20 hats.

Thanks for your help, bro.
I feel the same way about this hat, though I was under the impression that Twelve Fifties didn’t come out until the 50s, but I’m probably wrong.

An epilogue to yesterday's hat story... when Charles E. Blair of Laramie Wyo. closed his dry goods store in 1927, the property was sold to J.C. Penney. In my lifetime I have owned exactly one thing from J.C. Penney - this sporty Kennel Club fedora with novelty band and spiral stitched brim, presented today. Era unknown - perhaps 1940 or a little earlier.

Always good to see some love for these from folks outside of my Jewish community. I've got lots of them, but don't wear any as nicely as Robert does.
The Jewish community is not the only one that values their black hats. The protestants are known for their austere leanings (over here at least), verging on chromofobia. Loads of black hats to be found and a lot of them in more formal styles like homburgs. Aside from religious and technical reasons to appreciate the black hat, there is a practical one too (or at least there used to be): when houses were warmed and cooking was done with wood or coal, there was a lot of soot floating around in the air. Try and brush that off your white hat at the end of the day.
After grey, most of my hats are black.

Gotta go uptown on the Victory to pay bills and such, so this old hat will be my riding partner and big, Hard saddle bags will make it a safe trip.
Change of pace for you, Randall. Looks great though and a cool find. Wonderful d'Orsay curl on the brim. The hat that won the west!
Chance to style the Stylemaster casual.

A brim with attitude: I like it. Very cool chelsea boots as well.
