Been mostly in Open Roads this last week but I switched it out for my Northwest Hats beaver today.

I have been so busy catching up with things after our beach trip, I haven’t had much time to think about hats! I’m finally getting caught up enough to take a little coffee break with my daughter and one of my favorite straws. It’s the Stetson Inwood Turquoise (sorry I post this one probably a little too often), and my daughter’s hat is a Karen Keith Raffia that she bought in a neat little hat shop in Charleston SC a couple of years ago.

Black hats, for some reason, have a funereal reputation. I disagree. A black Fedora can lift an entire outfit, it's a stylish accessory of timeless elegance. Mine was hand made by Susquehana Hats, it has never faded and still retains it's strong colour.
And I happen to concur.
The ability to make a black hat was once the requisite to become a master hatter and black hats were the pinnacle of elegance and standing. We need more love for black hats and you show exactly how its done, Robert.

Now my outfit with a black Akubra Bogart.

Awesome. I own that Inwood and I'm actually from Charleston originally. I'm connected to both hats. Also, having been in Charleston, you must have seen the famous Charleston Hat man on Broad St., right?

The black Akubra with the leather coat - that ROCKS. You're killing it.
Thanks for kind words.

The leather overcoat is from LeatherCult and was the Peaky Blinders one made longer and using grey waxed thick goat skin. Not that expensive but very well made.

The trick with leather overcoats is not to look like an extra from a WW2 movie playing a SS or Gestpo officer. So play an English gangster instead I suppose?

I have another on order in the unwaxed version and even longer to a different design.

Yes I’ve been through the Charleston Market more times than I can count, and I’m very familiar with Charleston Hat Man. My parents had a house in Folly Beach that my sisters and I have fond memories of. Charleston is one of my favorite places.

Always good to see some love for these from folks outside of my Jewish community. I've got lots of them, but don't wear any as nicely as Robert does.
Jeff, Stefan, Ent, Gentlemen, thank you all for your compliments, much appreciated.

By coincidence the black hat gets another outing today, but it's not taking pride of place. Tina came across the dog-tooth patterned blazer at a trader's stall at The Goodwood Rvival, it needed quite a few problems resolving, like poorly fitting sleeves, but once done she presented it to me with the surprise pair of trousers that she had made. The hat and trousers set that blazer off perfectly.

This fun little hat started out as a big Stetson Gus. When it came to me it had some severe brim edge damage ... and oil/ hydraulic fluid splotches all over it. I got it from a farmer buddy who had more than a few accidents with it (Supposedly it had been chewed by a goat .... and we think moth nibbles are bad lol))

Spent some time in a gas bath and mostly got it back to one color. Got the torn brim parts trimmed off and still had 2-1/4" brim left. Originally I threw on the Panama band temporarily until i could make a nice band, but it grew on me and its been there for a couple years now.

Nice to have a pre-abused hat that I dont have to worry about

The way you transform a hat is amazing. Bravo!

@mayserwegener - you've inspired me. My two purchases today were both Hückels, including one coming from France that was originally sold in Bern, Switzerland and one that is a specialty item that is no longer made, but is well-know in the Chassidic Jewish community as the "Hückel Hat". Of course I will post in the appropriate forum when the arrive (separately).
Jeff, Thank you! I look forward to seeing your finds.

Postman just dropped off another nice summer straw. This one a Cute Dobbs with a two tone straw...Medium grey crown and black brim (2-1/8" brim.) Tag says the model is called the Sterling. Nice condition..... just a bit of steam and the random little dents are smooth and the brims straighter. Ill chalk this one up as an ebay victory
