The last hanging where I grew up took place in 1896 for the Meeks family murders. And they put up a stockade & sold tickets.

They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town

Funny, I remember when that song was called "Alice's Restaurant":

Unidentified sailor from the crew of the USS Benton Civil War ironclad ***boat. My maternal great-great-grandfather served on the USS Benton with a crew of 176 men, & I know of no pic of him either.

The ships name on the sailors cap which was common.

Patrolling both the Mississippi River & the Yazoo River the Benton was in the battles at Island No. 10, Memphis, Grand Gulf, & Vicksburg during the 1863 Union siege. The USS Benton was decommissioned in July 1865.
