I believe you're right about the felt color, but it's definitely at the dark end of the scale; black with just a hint of cherry.

It’s probably been covered here before, but Walker Evans did a great series of photos on the New York subway with a great selection of hats, styles and people.
You can google his book “Many are Called”. He is well known for his photo of a woman in the dust bowl perhaps during the Depression.
Another great photography source is Robert Frank.
