Looks like what we would normally associate with a western hat, but you see it quite often in the 20s and 30s fedoras, less so in the 40s.

Really? It's probably my "modern" sensibilities, but none of those hats suggest "western" to me in any way. Assuming, that is, that by "western" you're referring to the American old west and not west coast fashion trends.

Not a cowboy hat, but Perry might be talking about the old "cavalry" crease, a double-ended diamond.

The crown bash looks like a cattleman crease with a sharp dent in the front of the crown, at least the one I think he's referencing. I could be wrong though.

they were comparing early hip hop pioneer artists who were never recorded to early jazz artists who were also never recorded and drawing all the paralleles between the two styles .
