That looks as if it could be straight off the set of Sweet Smell of Success, with Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. . . .

Yup. They were an actual thing: usually cut down to pointy "crowns" by kids from tossed away fedoras, back when hats were common and cheap.

A character in John Steinbeck's The Wayward Bus wears one, and we're told that was how he'd made his, from an old fedora.

Oregon Agricultural College History professor John B. Horner (1856-1933) image circa 1925. He is on the right wearing a spiffy homburg. Horner taught at the college from 1891 to just prior to his passing in 1933. Wrote many histories of Oregon, and had some kooky ideas. He did a radio show in 1930 where he proposed that the "early Indians domesticated the Mammoths that roamed the Oregon valleys for planting crops..."
