I agree. Although I’ve not compared their measurements with the Pike size charts the other issue with their N-1’s is the variance that can be found within sizes.
I’ve had two 1943 Omaha’s in size Large and one was a bit smaller than the other, although not enough to have been a mislabel.
Also, my 1944 Waxed Khaki jacket is an XL, however it is again smaller and more like an L when compared with the XL 1943 Omaha I had previously (and it’s also a better fit and with less tubular sleeves)

I’m not sure why this should be other than all the jackets would have been made at different times, with at least a year and more between their manufacturing dates.

I’m probably not going to be in a cold climate again for at least 8 months, so I guess there’s no rush to add an N1 to my wardrobe. But I’m currently thinking I’ll keep an eye out for a used Buzz or (mostly likely), if we get a no tariff window in 150 days I’ll order a Red Tornado then.

Bronson and Pikes would be contenders if I could try them on in person or returns were easier.

I went through the whole thread - does anyone have a source where I can get the hooks/ clasps similar to those on the Buzz Ricksons and other deck coats (I guess some sort of stamped sheet metal)? I have a LVC repro of a 50ies/60ies coat with these clasps but some are missing. Thanks!

I’ve tried several Pike N-1 Deck jackets, [......] all of them suffered with overly long and tubular sleeves. So much so that they almost looked like pool noodles strapped to your arms...

THIS is about the best and funniest paraphrase of what I consider the biggest flaw of (at least many) their DJs.

I searched high and low for quite a while myself for a project with no luck. I'm still not sure what they would properly be called. Every descriptor I tried came up with anything but. Finally, by accident (not by search prompt) I found them at Mash Japan in 'Metal Fastenings but Zipper'. Not cheap, but there you go. Since you are doing replacements, you won't need to scare up the proper size oval grommet setter.

I received the Bronson today! First off, the materials and finishing are very nice, especially considering the price which was $190 shipped. It came from New Jersey and only took a few days to get to western Washington. There is a peculiar kind of chemical smell but I'm kind of susceptible to that. As for the fit...I couldn't size up as they were out of that size. It looked by the chart that I could take my usual size, so I went ahead and tried it. The overall fit is great, sleeve length and jacket length are spot on. The sleeves are a bit tight though and I understand what people are saying about the arm holes sitting too high. I have plenty of room around the midsection but it's a bit tighter around the chest. Fits perfect with a t-shirt, a little tight with a long sleeved waffle henley. Not sure if I'm keeping yet. It is warm for sure!

I did return the jacket. Fairly painless process. Looking forward to some warmer weather anyway!

Some pics of Dehan 1920 in darkwood camo size small. Dry wax canvas lightweight 10.1 oz. Very soft and fuzzy to the touch. It does not have any burnt wax smell like my Filson tin cloth has. The Mouton is luxurious. It fits like a large arm hole opening vest. The Mouton is 3.1" away from the zipper on both sides of the jacket. Two thirds of the front panel is covered by Mouton and the center 6.2" is waxed canvas only. Jacket is 21.5" measured flat across the front. The sleeves have the 10.1 ounce waxed layer on the outside and the inner layer is a thin cotton and satin sandwich. The total thickness of these 3 layers is about the thickness of a dime. A few pictures of the fabric doubled on itself (6 layers) between a quarter and a nickel. One picture of just the inner doubled on itself (4 layers).

I tested this jacket today in 23 degree temperature with 50 mph winds. No wind got past the sleeves, neck or bottom opening. The collar keeps your neck and ears toasty. Body plenty warm wearing only a Wonder Looper tee shirt. The sleeves rely on the dead air space between the arms and the silky lining. If you cross your arms so the lining makes more contact with the skin it has a cold wet sensation. I would say the sleeves are very similar to wearing a nylon shirt and a type 3 Jean jacket. The outer darkwood waxed material is very soft and moves without any restriction. I would say this jacket is suited for someone who likes to wear a thick vest and a heavy cotton shirt. A shell and vest type combo. The sleeves have slightly more warmth than a pair of jeans. Think silk lined jeans. The center front third of the jacket is uninsulated. It is also likely not breathable due to the wax treatment. Buttoning rather than zipping would provide ventilation. The zipper is super easy to use and butter smooth. No sharp edges. The am hole picture showing the 11" area from the top of the shoulders to below the armpit where it doesn't have any mouton.

I recently bought the Iron Heart N1 oiled whipcord deck jacket.
I wanted a dark/black jacket with an inside pocket. Not much choice… it came down to the IH and the Dehen. Dehen is great, but twice the cost of the IH here.
So I got the IH. Happy about my purchase.

BTW: I like oversized, beefy zips…
