I don’t know if Pike Bros. have altered the pattern but I always thought the wide tubular sleeves on their N-1’s were the things which really let the jackets down.
If they have sorted the sleeves across the full range so that they’re now tapered at the cuffs it will have removed probably the main reason for not buying.

I imagine that with increasing wear, the sleeves will break in a little and the effect will become less pronounced.

Had an older RMC deck jacket in navy. They come up about a size too small. 38 in the below image. It was still my favourite jacket I owned at the time…

I then sold it and swapped for a Butcher Products in size 42. The jungle cloth is a lot softer and alpaca lining thicker but only marginally. The zip is also a lot studier and locks. I’d definitely recommend this version if you can get your hands on one. Easily the jacket I reach for the most when the winter weather hits.

I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction - I just got a new N1 from Dant (a Dehen collaboration) and it doesn't have a draw string/cord at the bottom of the jacket (usually a powder skirt in synthetic jackets), so I'm wondering if there is one that can be purchased and added to this jacket to help restrict some wind coming into the jacket?

Cheers!

Hi,

I’m currently breaking in the Freewheelers N1 - finally getting somewhere and loving it.

Looking forward to many years of this piece keeping me warm through our British winters ✌

is it common for deck jackets to shed some of its pile lining?

i have a bronson a2 and n1 and every once in a while i'll notice some of the lining fibers have come off onto my shirt.

or if i lightly pinch the lining ill easily be able to pull off maybe 4 or 5 fibers.

just curious if this is is a bronson thing or a deck jacket thing in general.

This is not the case with my Pikebrothers (wool) and Mil-TEC (faux fur) jackets.

Just checked on the two I have - the Dehen, nothing came off, the Buzz Rickson, it does as you said - I ran a wool brush over the BR lining, where I got quite a bit of fluff, and now it doesn't have the issue of fibers coming off when I pinch and pull - maybe it just needs to be brushed?

Didn’t happen with McCoy N-1 and I gently combed it regularly. Also doesn’t happen with my timeworn version that I have noticed. Maybe it’s just an initial shed like others have mentioned.

They never answer emails and sometimes send out the wrong item. I had to file a complaint with PayPal to get their attention. They did fix it, after a few weeks/months. My advice, eat the tariffs and go with a Japanese brand. If you aren't needing every stitch to be 100% accurate to a WW2 jacket, go with Iron Heart, best quality and no tariffs even though they are Japanese.

SM isn't reliable enough to spend 100s of dollars on.

They claim to make period costumes for Hollywood movies so I doubt they need our business anyway, though it's nice that they are willing to sell to the general public.

Also Dehen 1920 and Heatstraps make deck jackets in the USA.

If you want a cheap period-accurate one, go with Pike Brothers, they are foreign but the price should offset the tariffs.

IH might be too warm for Texas, but I’m leaning towards the Buzz Demotex jacket - especially if I find one used.

Did you actually receive an SM jacket or file the complaint because you never got it? They do look accurate - but sometimes movies prop clothing isn’t that great - made to look good on film, not to be worn.

I still get the ‘itch’ (hope it isn’t really itchy) to get an N1 because those pics of 50s stars wearing them look so damn cool. Even though I really don’t need anything that warm and casual (the rare times I go somewhere cold it’s for work and I’ll be a little more dressed up). So, with that said, I still look at sub $500 options (waiting for a pea coat I have listed to sell for near this)

Used Iron Heart
Used Buzz Rickson Demotex
SM Warehouse
Bronson
Red Tornado
Pike Bros

It might depend on what’s around when I have the cash
