I made my dress of quilting cotton as well, but I used 2 layers as the cloth was nearly see through. This thread is an incentive to get the darn thing hemmed so I can post pictures!

I recently bought a vintage dress with an elasticized waist and a top that was huge on me. The bodice only had side seams so I figured I could alter it. I just had to have it, mostly because of the fabric! Once I started deconstructing the frock, I realized that, with the arm and neck facings and all of that, it would be way too difficult for me to alter and reconstruct - I just don't have that level of skill yet.

So anyway, now it's a skirt! I cut the waistband out of the top. It was a bit of a challenge, as I had to put a seam in the waistband due to the limited quantity of fabric I had, and getting the waistband and skirt seams placed correctly proved to be a challenge. Also, this skirt has 2 seams in front and back and no side seams, and I needed an opening... so the waistband opening is actually along a seam on one side of the back, and I just used snaps to keep it closed.

I'm pleased with how this turned out and you can't even see the opening.

This is Agent Josephine reporting from the trenches on 4790. In an attempt to fit the dress to my measurements I made the top a 22 and the bottom a 20. However, it seems that the neckline is much to big. Although that might have been an after effect of lowering the neckline, losing supporting fabric and causing the shoulders to flop out. Am now attempting to rectify that by biting the ****** and taking off the bias tape around the front neck...

Have just discoved I actually took off the tape of the back neck, and must now take off all the tape. Morale is low, but I will press on and report back on the mission to complete 4790.

whew! 4790 is done (nearly), all I have to do is sew on the front buttons. I think next time I go to Joanne's I will get heavier duty snaps, as the ones I used seem IMO too lightweight. Pictures (and a new thread unless someone finishes before I get to it) and more info on what went wrong and how I tried to right it will have to wait until tomorrow as I forgot to turn off the camera after I DL'ed the hat pictures and the battery went dead.

I agree, leaving the neck binding until last is probably the best way to go. The slit neck sounds good too, unfortunately they don't look good on me. I need a big scoop or V neck.

For a shooting I just finished a outfit to match my late 50s early 60s vacaum cleaner in light blue. The Top is from a older Burda easy fashion mag and the A-Line skirt is made from an enlarged pattern printed in one of the 50s Brigitte mags that I bought earlier.



Photos of me actually wearing it will follow after the shooting :-D
