Lost Worlds, what is the difference between Buco j23 and j24?

I asked Stuart and he said "only the extensive handwork, bespoke parts & labor, separate J23 from J 24. Otherwise, same jacket. And belt is included in J23 price, not in J24."

I didn't want to be annoying so I didn't ask him to elaborate. Anybody know?

Have you looked at the jackets? One is bedazzled with stones, etc and one is not. The bedazzled version is more expensive…Because it’s bedazzled and bedazzling takes time. That’s it. If you want to be shiny, get the bedazzled j-24. If not, get the j-23. I had two j-23’s. The stones did not do it for me and I didn’t want the belt.

Yeah, I have visited it a ton, I am deciding between Speed Demon, j24, and Trojan, although Trojan doesn't have the little fastener things on the triangular parts of the jacket that attach it to the body to keep your jacket from flapping in the wind while riding, so it's probably just between Speed Demon and J24 now. Speed doesn't have the D pocket and the belt is not detached in the same way that an added option J24 belt is, HOWEVER this one specific picture of the Speed Demon looks a lot cooler than most of the j-24 pictures on the J24 page so I will have to keep pondering between these two, but due to the previously mentioned I might be leaning towards j24 personally.

Back in 2020, I created the following thread after receiving a new-to-me LW J23 (well, at the time it was still called the J23).

Since then, sometime around 2024, Stuart flipped the nomenclature on his website regarding the J23 & J24. Prior to this time, he listed them as:
--J23 - plain D-pocket cross zip, that came with a snap-off fur collar, belt was an option.
--J24 - same D-pocket design cross-zip, also with snap-off fur collar, but studded belt and studded details were standard. as his website clearly indicates, it takes a lot more time to build the Studded version, and the studs he uses are of high quality.

In 2024 - these were reversed. Now the J23 is the studded, J24 is not. They have always been D-pocket cross-zip jackets. He must have learned that the original Buco jackets were actually designated that way. To me it's just quite confusing. I personally would have simply left them as-is, since many customers just knew them by the original designation.

These jackets are a serious investment, if you decide they are for you, hope we can see some photos of it after you receive it.

Yeah, I am in college right now (I'm 20 years old) but for being in their honor program my dad has very graciously promised to get me a LW jacket as my combined christmas/birthday gift (Birthday is early january) so I should buy it around September and receive it around December. I'm really grateful, because they are really expensive. I already have been saving up my money for a motorcycle (to be bought once I'm out of college).

Yeah, I bet. I have a (admittedly extremely cheap and bottom of the barrel) fashion jacket rn and it takes me a while to stud and put my own additions into that without making it look like dog****. I can't imagine how long it will take to stud a thick jacket, but I'm planning to figure out. I'm either going 4.5 or 5 oz, whatever the thickest is offered for the j24, and then wear it every day to break it in.

I cannot imagine having one of these while in college. Though I really wanted something like it then. I did wind up with an Excelled at some point, very second hand.

Regarding Studding - this is where Lost Worlds makes them really "right" and here's a detail from their website that describes the process: The result a different kind of merger: peerless, awesome LOST WORLDS artisan-grade build quality and materials wedded faithfully to the classic Buco J23 design.Taken to a certain extreme, a beautiful, artistic one, OUR extreme. There's wonderful balance in the way Buco (we think it was Buco) customized. Detailed but not gaudy. Understatedly overstated. The stones 'n' studs are symmetrical accents, nothing too much. Our homage ups the ante significantly. It takes nearly a full workday for our craftsman to measure, eyeball, set and install the fittings before any sewing takes place. Most are installed during pre-production, others during.

They key as Stuart notes, is to not overdo it. With an old Excelled or Vanson, or Bates, not usually a big deal. Good luck as you decide!

Yeah im really excited, and I agree on the studding thing. My cheap jacket is a different vibe, I wear it to metal concerts and stuff but I'd never wear it on a motorcycle because it'd disintegrate the moment I hit any pavement due to how thin it is. But on my cheap jacket I put a bunch of band patches and spikes and studs that I did myself, although I don't think I would go as crazy with a LW jacket because of the improved craftsmanship and how the vibe and purpose (safety on a motorcycle) are different than my cheap battle jacket, so I'm probably just going to some shorter spikes on the collar or wrist

Word of advice: just make sure it fits comfortably. Theres a lot of talk about how leather jackets like this should be skin tight but I just don’t think that’s the case. And in my college days I was prone to choosing something as small as possible that I ultimately would never be able to wear just a few years later.

If you have never handled a leather jacket this heavy before, I advice caution. Many people order them and then never wear them and complain how heavy and stiff they are. Eventually they sell them for a fraction of sale price. A standard straight front zip jacket in 4+ Oz hide is already heavy, these cross zips with all the extra leather and hardware.. it is a lot. Too much to wear comfortably around town for most. Check eBay, there is a LW Buco for sale by Stu there.. 3.5 Oz and it still looks more substantial than almost everything else offered out there, never you mind some cheap fashion jacket as yours. (here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/398030233508? ) Just to give you an idea, a jacket made from 3.5 Oz leather weighs about 6 lbs in a size 40, more if it is a cross zip)

Don't get me wrong, I love a heavy leather jacket, my LW Test is 4.5 Oz horsehide but I did not walk into that blindly..
