What to do with long hair?

This is my friend Kim:

She recently asked me to do her hair in vintage style for a photoshoot she has coming up. I've mastered pincurls and rolls, and think with a minimum amount of setting lotion her hair should hold a curl nicely. Except that her hair is waist length now, and she needs it to be an up-do.... I've looked around on the lounge and the web, all I've been able to find are pictures of the front of hair and alot of hairdo's for short hair. Does anyone have suggestions for really long hair? And possibly a few instructions?

What era of vintage? I'm not sure where these would fall, but here is a site I would go to a lot when I had waist length hair: Styling Central Station. In Timely Fashion has Regency and Edwardian.

I might put the back in a french twist with some flowers placed in the twist, and tease the front and roll it into victory rolls.

For a 30s look do a loose marcel wave & put the back up in a roll. I remember seeing Gwyneth Paltrow at an awards show a few years back & that is how she wore hers.

For a 40s look do the Veronica. Do a deep side part & pull the front pieces forward & roll it to the roots, then roll the back only part way up.

Depends on how glam its got to be...but using a snood works wonders for my long length hair. Check out my myspace it has a few ideas on there.

This was my first attempt, pretty much without a mirror. I have bangs in front - that's the weird curl that's coming out on the left side. They always do that when they need trimmed.

Sunny, how do you roll your hair up at the back? I've never been able to manage it.

I don't know how Sunny does it, but I take a handful of hair from my temples, twist each one into a tight rope ( make then tight as they loosen when you do the rest of your hair), and then clip them together in the back (above the nape) with a barrette. Then I gather all the hair below the barrette like I am beginning to make a low pony tail, and roll it up as if I had a foam roller or the like in it. I lift the roll up and over the barrette, and stuff it into down behind the barrette into the little pocket the roll made. The Edwardian Twist shows the beginning part well, and instead of making a little bun above the barrette, I stuff it in.

Here's what it looks like, I threw it up to take a pic of the comb, which I didn't even get centered. I don't always get it right on the first try.

Oooh thank you - I'll give that a try. I just had my hair cut at the weekend so it may not be long enough now but I understand the theory now at least!

My way's totally different! lol It's really just making rolls, though. I have two front rolls, above the ears. That takes care of the hair at my temples at the very front/top of my head. The rest is divided very evenly into three parts, as if to be braided. But I make a roll with the center one, as if around a curler, but nothing's in the center. I pin each roll with four bobby pins, making one X from each side - extremely secure. The other two rolls go on either side. The really hard part is getting them even and looking like one. The photo above is a good angle - I've got another that shows where they didn't balance!

My hair is naturally wavy, coarse, and frizzy, and generally speaking, it does not make smooth rolls. When I first started I practically doused each piece of hair in mousse just to keep the wispies together while I was rolling. Now I can do it without. But I always put a clip on the hair right after I get it brushed out straight from my head, and remove it just when the roll gets to that point. This is invaluable for keeping the visible part of the roll smooth and not loose, fuzzy, or loopy.

Thanks for the tips Sunny - my hair is coarse, wavy and frizzy too so if you can manage it I should be able to as well! I'm not at all sure that I can do a roll behind my head though - I really struggle to do them where I CAN see, let alone out of sight!

Josephine - I tried your method last night and it worked first time - amazingly easy!! I wasn't expecting to be able to manage it, especially with my hair cut shorter but it was so quick and simple. I'll post a pic later so you can see the results.
