Do they make decent "starter" suits?

I've found a few inexpensive ones (as stated in another thread) and I need to know if I should jump in on the deal.

Experience with the company?

Their "Joseph" line does tout higher armholes, but I haven't tried one on to check.

I would try one on, but the store here is so dead most of the time they don't even bother stocking that line.

Jos A. Bank is its own company and has their own stores. Check their website- it lists locations. Sometimes you can catch a break on prices at their stores or outlets. Worth a look, at least.

Their website is a good place to shop. I picked up a grey pinstripe Business Express DB suit coat for $39.50 a while back. I haven't been able to afford the trousers, yet, though. Many of their stores don't carry the DB suit coats.

By watching their online sales, I can usually get a suit (out of their suit separates) for $100, give or take $20 either direction. Of course, the alterations add to the cost from there. Even on a short-sized coat, I have to have the sleeves shortened.

Also, clearance stuff goes on sale on their website before it hits the stores.

I like their suits, as they are affordable, and I can actually get separates in my size.

I wish the lapels were wider and the fabric was heavier, but other than that, they're fine.

I shop at the two J.A.B stores here and have had good success with a great deal of their clothing. However, I feel that their two tailors could do better and I've noticed some of their customers walk out of there with some trouble with the armholes and sometimes they come in with arm length tailoring issues. However, their clothes are of good quality and I myself watch their website and the advertisements they put out because they do have deals occasionally. Take for instance two to three weeks ago, they had a 20% off selected clothing (suits, casual wear, outerwear) that I had the chance to go and reap the benefits. However, I do find that their are other men's clothiers like Patrick James and such that do have an emphasis on vintage styles for men's clothing. I wouldn't say either stores have a focus, but I feel that Patrick James does err more towards the vintage side.

Their anniversary sale which was two weeks ago is the best time to buy on the Jos. A Bank website. They had poplin & seersucker suits for only $99.00! I do like their cotton twill (long rise) pants when they are also on sale for $29.95.

Jos A Bank has a sale every week. If you watch closely you can find some really great deals. The trick is to wait and learn before buying.

I visited Jos A. Banks last week to try on a couple of suits. They have some very nice suits. I almost purchased one, but decided against it when I found out that I could not order the trousers with a flat front. I don’t like the way pleats look on me.

The other thing that I noticed is the armholes are standard size. I was hoping to find something with a higher/smaller cut. I asked the salesmen and tailor about the armholes and got confusion at first. After explaining what I was looking for and why I wanted higher armholes they understood, but said they didn’t have what I was looking for. I expected the answer.

Overall, I think that they have some very good suits. I just wasn’t able to find what I was looking for.

In other news, I've applied to work at one near me. But given that they rarely take young people seriously there and have never called me back for an interview, I don't really expect much.

I got good service at the one in Queens I went to. Picked up a nice brown suit with 2 pairs of pants. One matching, one checked.

Decent cut and fabric.

The sales clerk was an older man who knew his business. Might have an in with a granddaughter next time I'm out.

And it's all due to the suit education I got here on FL.
