Installing Wind Cords

I run mien, through the body, and attach it well up near the reed tape. Most secure.
Yes, a small hole, and feed it through with your tool of choice. I don't finish, the tie down, until ribbon is in place and proper. Then I make some final adjustments, and tie it in place, inside the crown.

I'd suggest tying it to a small shirt button inside and under the sweat band. If and when the chord is engaged by a considerable gust of wind, a button would be less likely to pull through the felt than any size knot would probably make.

Something tells me, that I'd likely feel that button, against my head, as they are thick.

I do a loop back in there, in the cord, it's tied in, really, very well. I doubt, it would come free. It's the step I take, to be sure.

I know this is Stoneys, thread, and I know folks are looking for his pictures so I don't want to just jump in. But I did want to offer a valuable method to doing this in the meantime, it's a pretty solid way.

I would have thought so too but no, not at all. Tucked in behind the sweat band at the bow, I've never even perceived it there. Think about it, where on the circumference of a hat is the least pressure against the head? The sides right? Worth a try anyway if you are so inclined. I've had no problems.

The only problem I have had was the chord stretching out. It's only been really tested about twice but seems to have stretched nonetheless. I really don't even use it that much anymore.

I'm actually thinking of using Magician's thread /Invisible thread/Quilter invisible thread for a wind cord/trolley. That way it stays inconspicuous when in use. Any of you or you know someone that has experiences about their strengths?

Perhaps you would be better served working as an apprentice to a hatter or at least getting some hat making and repair lessons. You could learn the trade and get contacts and sources. Just a thought.

The finished button can be worn at the front or back of the bow knot by changing the direction that you put the loop over the hat as shown below:

The finished cord removed from the hat and ready to attach to your jacket.

I just got a Dobbs Basino. So lightweight. The seller found it and purchased it specifically my size, knowing I would buy it.
I really needed this tutorial like all get out. My town has alleys that have such a strong wind, I've seen guys walk out of the alley with their hair blown back like a Katzenjammer kid.
