Hornskov Hats - custom Danish hatter

My 1st Hornskov was about €200. 100% beaver. This was in 2018 i think.
Now you pay more then €500 for the beaverblend. But they are still nice hats!! :)
I started hatting in that same year. Back then a Winchester beaver felt could be had for about $60 ...if I remember correctly. A rabbit about 1/2 that. If the postage was included in the 200 Euro price he wasn't making a lot of profit when he started out. So now the felt would cost 100 euro, the shipping probably 50-60 euro to the USA.

Then add in his rent, shop costs etc. So he is making 350 euro gross per hat for about 8 to 10 hours work. It is a living but he ain't getting rich from his work.

Don't get me wrong. I totally understand the price raising. And if the hat is worth the money then it's totally fine. ;-)

No new Hornskov hats lately? I was checking his website today, but his prices increased incredible. More then 100%. Is there anyone in the queue?
I'm waiting for my 3rd, a Diamond.

I hear what you're saying about prices, Marcel. Luckily, I bagged this one while Hornskov were offering a 30% deal as part of their 10th year anniversary celebrations. Otherwise, I don't think I would have bought it.

I agree though with Robert @belfastboy , artisan hat makers aren't making much money out of their work. But thank goodness they keep making them.

So I guess (note to self here :) ), if we love hats and they keep creating them, then maybe we ought to spare a little on the vintage hats and save up to buy a custom.

I just checked the new pricing on the Husst felts from Millinery Warehouse....holy **** they have jumped up a huge % again. What was $50 for a rabbit felt is now $70.

As with my other two Hornskovs, I'm so happy with the fit, workmanship, attention to detail, and customer service.

It may well not be my last Hornskov.

It's a beauty, Steve. Shape, colour and craft. Would prefer real grosgrain over petersham ribbon myself, but I think it's near impossible to find these days.

Thanks, Stefan. It's definitely a keeper.

Hornskov advertise it as a grosgrain, perhaps a bit naughty of them. However, a Petersham ribbon does have some advantages over a grosgrain.

I do agree with you, though. A true grosgrain is preferable.

I may have mentioned this before, but I think that for each one of my Hornskovs, the Diamond was my second choice. So I always thought “next time, I’ll go for the Diamond.” Now I just don’t know if I’ll be able to justify the cost of another Hornskov. Truth be told, I wish I’d gone for the Diamond instead of my Rancher.

I‘m sure I read somewhere (and I imagine that you are both more knowledgeable about this stuff than me) that petersham is technically a grosgrain ribbon. That said, their vintage grosgrain option is a “true” grosgrain, but it’s a decent little price hike from memory. I went for all the bells and whistles for my Emissary (vintage grosgrain & wind trolley) thinking that I may not get another.

I was lucky with this one and got 40% off as part of Hornskov's 10th anniversary offers. Glad I did, I wouldn't have been able to fork out the full price. Not that it's not worth the full price.

When I was trying to decide which hat to choose, after I'd paid the deposit, I kept coming back to the Diamond. I guess it was meant to be.

I don't believe Petersham is a grosgrain, though they are quite similar. I think it's the slight differences that sets them apart.
