(does C&J ever offer their products at a reduced price at all...??).
Every summer and christmas but never above 25%.
so people are too easily dismissing them as "sub par", IMO.
If you saw the wear of the leather soles of the g0 pair I owned (which cost handgrade c&j prices) compared to the much less wear of my much more worn c&j or tricker's then you would probably agree that they are "sub par". Agreed, the statistic sample is small as I own only one pair of Grensons against 9 pairs of Trickers and C&J's. Maybe I was unlucky.

Grenson used to have 3 product lines (at least they did when I got mine 9 years ago); the made in India g2, the made in the UK g1 (prices around the normal C&J line) and the rare g0 which uses to be their top series, prices sikilar to the C&J handgrade series. Fell for it and got me a g0, quality wise I would place it between loake and normal C&J, definitely not handgrade.

From what I've handled, I felt the middle-rang was about the best value. I still fancy a pair of those triple welt brogues, though. Did briefly own a pair of the top end penny loafers I bought on eBay used, but totally unworn. Likely unworn for the same reason I couldn't wear them - so narrow I couldn't get into the damn things. Length was fine, but width-wide they felt like two-sizes smaller compared to a Bass Weejun. And I'm not particular wide-footed, it's a rare last that I have to size up in. Sold them on at only a small loss (to a shoe dealer, funnily enough). Shame - they really were very nice.

I've noticed across the board leather soles on shoes don't seem to last as long now as they used to - though to be fair I'm always wearing them much more often than I did at a time. It's now a standard thing for me that even before I wear new shoes I'll have a rubber overlay put on the sole. Occasionally I'm not that organised, I must admit... I came a cropper because of that in a new pair of leather-soled Peter Christian penny loafers (nice shoes; much as I like my Bass weejuns, those feel a step up) on the Metro in Paris in October. Stood up at my stop just before the train stopped, and got thrown off balance with the slide. Bless them, The Parisians on the train were all very lovely about checking I was ok... so much for stereotypes!

Maybe I was unlucky but the leather sole of the g0 grenson started literally delaminating at the edges. I have had only one pair of boots with worse leather sole- the Aero Marchers, built by NPS.
On the contrary the leather soles of my c&j's, aldens and trickers are extremely hard wearing.

Des, I believe both of us have valid experience but by no means statistically relevant.

My two pairs of Grensons are both from the “Triple Welt” construction, and the whole welting feels pretty much indestructible. Both also have leather soles, and they show no signs of premature wear.

I have two of their “Triple Welts”, a two-tone brogue and a derby. I like them for their over-engineered look and feel.

The last is pretty narrow, yet the shoes themselves appear rather blunt, as the additional welt creates a veritable “rim” around the whole construction. I like it, but it’s not the most refined look.

Sagaras, fresh out of the box. The fit is perfect (something I was worried about). That Badalassi Nemesis hide looks good and should age beautifully. The storm welting looks really neat. I’m happy!

I’ve been wanting some burgundy boots for a long time now. Fell in love instantly with these Franklin and Poe x Wesco Jobmasters.
Insanely comfortable
