i don't think this photo has been posted in this thread already so here it is:

looks like America, early - mid 20s. the trousers look about 14 "
the fact that there's a crowd suggests that these are a bit of an 'event' trouser.

The caption that I've previously seen on that photo relates to it being someone showing off the newly arrived fashion for Oxford Bags, circa mid 1925. I'd be interested to know if anyone knows the original source of the photo and has seen the original caption.

Are these collegiates? This suit got sold on eBay some weeks ago for $99.99, with just one bid! :eeek: (And I didn't find the auction until after it had ended... :eusa_doh

a curious thing is that a trouser that has no taper at all - i.e. is straight from knee to bottom - can look flared from certain angles:

That's because human legs are naturally tapered and our eyes are used to see that, so when the legs are perfectly straight our brains interpret them as flaring out.

The imagined "flare" is mostly due to the slight break the pants make on the shoe.
If it floats without break it will look straight.

Actually a subtle taper was usual on normal 30's trousers.

And then I remember we have once talked about the movie "Wild boys of the road" (1933) which I still didn't see yet. On those kids the pants look indeed slightly flared.
But it might be the effect HBK described. It would be interesting to see if they also have fancy waistbands. Maybe somebody here has the DVD and can make some screenshots?
I noticed there are many cotton fabrics in the adds. So this might be the look they get when they are well worn and dirty.

The pockets on the Wild Boys pants are these

They start out as a cream flannel(?) It seems that most of the young people in the film are wearing a variation of this style. There is a great scene at a dance where all the boys are wearing flared light colored pants and dark very fitted jackets. It makes it seem that in 1933 this was a very common style.

I thought I'd add the auction photos of the listing above before they're gone. Interestingly short fly length, apparently accounting for the extra wide waistband.
I have never seen the seventies' take on these trousers, but the short fly length seems to invite the simile even more.

Edit: Specs added as per listing.

The wide 3" waistband features at total of ten buttons - eight exposed and two hidden. Talon zipper. The crotch is gusseted.

Waist: 30"
Hips: 41"
Rise: 16.5" from back gusset seam at front, 17" at back.
Width at Cuff: 22"
Cuff: 1 7/8"

Thanks for saving those here Nik. Had been following that auction with interest. REALLY LIKE the waistband, but the zipper pockets queer it for me.
