Very interesting indeed Dinerman. Thank you so much for your many informative posts like these ones. The flared denim trousers with contrast insert in the first scan are proof that 'there's nothing new under the sun'. I'd thought that look was kicked off by the likes of the Jackson Five or Elvis circa 1972.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

It's also interesting that the illustrations make the trousers seem really wide, yet many of them are just 22 inches at the cuffs, which isn't exceptionally wide.

Same thought - I watch a lot of old movies and I actively look at the clothes and don't remember seeing these. Regardless, Dinerman - thank you for the very interesting post and pictures.

These are also for men - the waist sizes on some of them go up to 36 inches (a doubt there were many boys with 36 inch waists in the 1930s).

Also known as 'Oxford Bags'

'Oxford bags' were quite different to 'collegiate pants'. The main difference is that collegiate pants are fitted at the seat and flare out. However Oxford Bags were wide through the entire length of the leg. Original Oxford Bags were actually slightly wider at the knee than the ankle.

Thanks TT - I should've added a '?' at the end as I hd never heard of the collegiate - although do wear somethign very similar (parrallel ir wide straight through) although from the pcitures it would seem the Oxfords being flared out (the bottoms being huge and much wider than the seat area or thigh) and thw Collegiate being more parralel don't you think?

and that 'vest' looks like a suspender belt... not going to catch on !

1932. Collegiate detailing on a suit. I like that style of pocket. I used to have a pair of breeches with them.
