Hi All,

Just curious, when I was looking to buy some collars for my shirt, the sites for the new collars would say that I should by 1/2 size larger. So my shirt is a 16 I should buy a 16.5. Does that go for original collars as well and why?

I have recently purchased a couple of shirts from Darcy Clothing (lewes. United kingdom), and the very helpful lady in the shop told me to get a collar that is half a size larger than the shirt collar size. Reason...the collar attaches to the outside of the shirt, so the circumference of the collar needs to be bigger.Hope this helps.

I don't agree with the half size larger and always go with my neck size for both shirt and collar. I once bought a 15.5" (per the recommendation) from Darcy but it was way too big to be usable and I ended up replacing it with a 15" (my neck size) which fit much better, albeit a bit snug. I can still breathe in it though.

But I guess that it depends on how the collar is measured; I know that some makers make their collars a little bit bigger than the stated size to eliminate confusion. Ironically that makes for more confusion as one don't know what to expect until receiving it.

If in doubt, get the recommended size and return it if you find it too large.

I couldn't agree more with your assessment. There is a lot of debate about this on the forum, and to ME, a collar that is a half size larger than ones neck looks wrong. You wouldn't buy an attached collar that way. I would rather have a tiny bit of cinching of the tunic than a comically large collar. I have my detachable collar shirts custom made, so I am assuming that they somehow make the shirts and collars a somewhat happy medium in size. But yes, with Darcy collars, I just buy them my actual neck size and all is well.
