Here is a new technique to make your crown open without a block.
That’s crazy. I may have to give it a try. I have two western hats that don’t have massive deep creases but because the crown is tapered I can’t seem to knock the crown out properlyHere is a new technique to make your crown open without a block.
I came across this video last night, only thing that I might be concerned with is whether it also changes the taper/straight sides. Here is a new technique to make your crown open without a block.

No stiff cardboard felt here! Gannon can do things with Winchester’s beaver dress weight felts that I haven’t seen from any other hatter.

Wish the link could embed, but here Gannon has a fantabulous grey felt hat. just a joy to see it sculpted on the fly.
Not sure about the Red one, Jim, but i recall Harry Anderson doing a sketch with a hat brim and the different type characters that wore them by changing the brim shape. It was amusing. For the past few days, I have been unsuccessfully looking for a video. Perhaps somebody could help. I remember a routine Red Skelton use to do where he showed the different types of characters he could play just by bashing his hat differently. All I can find that's even remotely close is his "How to imitate a drunk" video where he does a little hat stuff at the beginning.
Anybody else remember this?

I looked around a bit @Frunobulax and did see references to Skelton's hat changing, but couldn't find a video of it.
John Lofgren Monkey Boots Shinki Horsebuttt - $1,136 The classic monkey boot silhouette in an incredibly rich Shinki russet horse leather.
Grant Stone Diesel Boot Dark Olive Chromexcel - $395 Goodyear welted, Horween Chromexcel, classic good looks.
Schott 568 Vandals Jacket - $1,250 The classic Perfecto motorcycle jacket, in a very special limited-edition Schott double rider style. I looked a bunch too.Thanks. You seem to have gotten farther than I did.
I looked a bunch too.
While you are looking you should really see Red’s video of The Pledge of Allegiance from 1969. Quite tumultuous times, the height of the Viet Nam War and America was a very confused nation.
Quite moving!

I’ve watched a TON of videos of those custom
Western guys shaping a crown by hand with a steamer. I think it’s very cool. I like some of the atypical variations like a fold on the front of a fedora or a coffin crease.
You don’t see that kind of thing around here much I don’t think. What do guys think of those hats?
I also don’t understand wanting to shape the crown yourself - I didn’t realize that was a thing at first. I assume the hat guys set the crease once during the making process and that was it. I also only recently learned that a lot of hats start (or started, past tense) as open crown and are/were intended to be shaped as desired by the wearer.
I also generally prefer a clean, intentional look to a lived-in look, personally.
For those of you that don’t make hats - what is it you get out of shaping the crown yourself?
