We need a dedicated cal thread. I want to post a vintage cal ad for their cr's somewhere. I might post it up here.

I’m hoping for some wise TFL advice about what to do here. I have an unlabeled Cal that I like that originally came with a non Cal fake fur collar. I removed the collar because it was damaging the jacket’s leather collar and had the damage repaired by Cal Leathers.

I was thinking about having a mouton collar made for this jacket at Cal Leathers.

Alternatively, I could sell the unlabeled Cal and get a collar for my Star Glove.

As far as I know, my Star Glove never had a mouton collar, though.

I’m hoping for advice from folks out there. Both ideas have sounded good to me at various points in the past ;)

What damage occurred and how was your interaction with Cal? Would love to understand the details of both. As for selling the Cal, who would make the Star collar and do the period correct snaps? Have you discussed it with Cal? ( the obvious choice I’m guessing)

Good point! I assumed the collar snap placement would be the same between Star Glove and Cal, but it is not. The Star Glove does not have the pair of anchor snaps for a removable collar inside the jacket collar in back like Cals do. I also realized my Star Glove needs a replacement snap stud for one of the collar snaps that would hold a removable collar. Thanks for the heads up to be thoughtful about that repair.

I have not communicated with Cal yet. I have had good luck with phone calls in the past, so that was how I planned to reach out.

What damage was already repaired by them? I ask because my Cals are stored with the collars at the bottom of the storage bag, but I'll need to confirm I didn't leave any on. Bent leather is all I've ever seen.

How cold is it where you’re at? I’m in SoCal, have a few mouton collars that I have used only once.

The damage was minor, just some stress to a seam of the jacket collar. Cal fixed it for me. Usually I try my best to keep things as I find them

To clarify, I don’t think a real Cal collar would do any damage to one of their jackets. The snap patterns align properly. My unlabeled Cal had a non-Cal removable collar on it. I think it was misalignment of the removable collar snaps with the snaps on the jacket that caused the stress on the collar seam.

Another good point! I’m in the SF Bay Area, so a mouton collar is not likely to get much more use here than in So Cal.

This is my other good find from my recent Central Coast trip here in California. Thanks to Thrifty Beaches in SLO! I’m pretty sure this is a straight zip unlabeled Cal.

The retailer was a uniform shop in Oakland called The Hub Schneiders. I think the color of the exposed leather says horsehide.

The jacket is a trim fit on me, especially zipped up. The sleeves are just barely long enough, too. However, I think this jacket still needs to break in a lot. The mouton in the sleeves still looks brand new.

Great! They have more than one other tag here on the thread!
