19th Century Mackinaw?

Hello! Might anyone have an image of a 19th Century Mackinaw jacket? I'm researching a murder story from 1897, where the murderer discarded his bloodied coat and knife, and I wish to get a better visual of what this might have looked like.

Thanks!

Post 1912 advertisements showed the Mackinaw with a shawl collar (first row of images).

Prior to 1912, the advertisements consistently show a stepped or notched lapel (second row of images). The middle image shows the lapel closed for protection from the elements.

I think it is safe to say that the Mackinaw in 1897 were the same or very similar to the bottom row of Mackinaws.

Another factor to consider is the shell of the vintage Mackinaws was substantially heavier the the shell of the current coats. The current offerings are at 24 oz., I believe. I have a vintage Mackinaw that is 30 oz.

Good luck with your research.

The first row provides some additional information that could be very useful to OP; namely, that it looks like those early Mackinaws are essentially a double-breasted Norfolk jacket with a shawl collar.

This Norfolk jacket from the 1890s in the V&A collection might prove helpful as well.
