I love old gambling & saloon pictures! Such an honorable profession at the time to be a "sporting man". My grandmother's youngest brother was a sporting man & she was always embarrassed by that.

The referee in the ring sort of looks like Wyatt Earp with that mustache but Earp never refereed another fight after throwing the heavyweight fight as referee in San Francisco in 1896. Never prosecuted but subject to much reticule he left for Nome, Alaska & the Gold Rush the following yr.

It's only been since the '80s that they were shortened to 12 rounds from 15. Blame Boom Boom Mancini. However, I don't think 20 was that common after 1900 or so. John L. Sullivan went, like, 75 rounds at one point.
