Thanks girls! They do look much, much better without the strap.
I wanted to remove the entire strap, including the extension to the soles, but when I lifted one back, I discovered a really large seam. Bit miffed about that, but still an improvement:

thedanu I have these shoes in red. They're by Chelsea Crew - leather insoles, man-made uppers. I like this brand; they're affordable (I paid $69 for them) and I get compliments from strangers when I wear them. Chelsea Crew sizing is odd for me though. Sometimes I take a 37, other times a 38, so if you find them online, see if you can get the actual measurements. Oh, and this style has no tongue, so be careful not to lace too tightly.

I think the model name was Swindie but the store I frequent in New Orleans is technically an outlet store and I couldn't find them on the Nine West website.

I´ve seen these shoes on someones blog yesterday and since then drool over the red office shoes. But we neither have office here in germany (as far as I know) nor do I have so much money for one pair of shoes. I wish some cheap shoeseller would copy them.
