My understanding is they are and have been a huge market for hats for quite awhile. As with all things luxury, even modern Borsalinos are sold there specifically.
Vintage American goods have long been a big thing over there. My first wife was from Shikoku Island and had family all around Osaka. Every time we make a trip over, she hauled all kinds of stuff with her for resale. Back in the early 80s she once lugged an old set of MacGregor Tourney $50 pawn shop golf clubs through the airport and sold them for almost a grand.... just about paid for about half our airfare! Prices on vintage American hats from Japan are a bit pricey for my retired budget, but its always amazed me just how many nice old hats came out of Japan.

Today a hat I have not shown before, but have had a little while now: a circa 1950 (?), Barbisio. Nice felt this one, it is "Rat-Gondin" (Nutria). Really wide brim this one too, 2 3/4"to the curl. Great proportions.:)
