What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Today was probably the last warm Sunday of the year in Paris. I went strolling along the Marne River in an all-linen outfit, as you can see, and off-white high-waisted linen pants, cordovan tasseled loafers, and my old Borsalino hat.

Since I’m bald, I wear this hat every day in summer as my main protection from the sun, and I’m surprised how well it has survived all these years — first when I lived in Nice and later while I traveled with it around the world. This year, it travelled with me to Azerbaijan. I definitely did not expect it to last this long. Maybe it’s because I always clean it carefully. I only wish I had replaced the sweatband this year when I replaced its grosgrain.

The photo is probably a bit weird. I have no talent for selfies :)

Today, I am wearing "the hat that started it all". After a few days in Spain with family, we boarded a plane bound for the Croatian coast. The old town’s stone alleys felt older, quieter, more intimate than Barcelona’s boulevards, and as we wandered about without purpose, a splash of color drew me from a market stand not far from Diocletian's Palace. There it was: a blue straw trilby, cheap and slightly crooked. I tried it on. In the cracked mirror, I looked different—lighter, freer, almost younger. The vendor grinned. “Five euro.” I did not hesitate. That afternoon. I wore it along the Riva promenade. Strangers smiled at me. For the first time in years, I felt playful and unburdened. Back home, my wardrobe was safe and dull; this trilby was anything but. We made another pitstop in Madrid, Spain before returning back home and the hat stayed on my head throughout. Soon, this cheap blue straw trilby became a collection of many vintage and modern felt hats. I learned about hatters and studied their history, which only made me want to add one of their works to my growing collection. What began in Spain as aimless wandering and in Split as a five-euro purchase became the start of my hat journey.

Next week no hats of the week; I'm off to Madeira in a few days.
Such a lovely selection, as always. I'm going with the Borsalino Biber as #1, the Hückel as #2, and the Dobbs as #3. Thanks for sharing, Stefan, and safe travels!

No hats next week? Do you realise all the withdrawal symptoms that will cause?
Two hats, one for this week and one for next. The Barbisio & The Dobbs.
Enjoy the Island of Madeira Stefan, and wear your straw hat, the sunshine gets very strong in that part of the world.
Thanks, Robert. I plan on doing just that!
