We are off to Southampton to buy tickets for Saturday at a popular Latin Dance Event.
Tina is still in recovery and isn't allowed on the ballroom floor yet, she mustn't allow her
heart to race as it does with exercise, but engaging with good friends at these events
is proving good therapy.
The black hat that Susquehana made for me goes well with this blazer, it even inspired
Tina to complete the outfit by making me a period correct pair of black trousers.

What does one do with a pretty much trashed Stetson Gus? ( a rancher friend gave this one to me with tractor oil splatters, tire marks where it was partially run over by an atv, and it actually had GOAT nibbles in a couple places around the brim edge). Id call it a real distressd hat. lol

If it hadnt been for the brim damage I would have done a brim curl, but it wasnt an option with the missing brim parts. so..... I disassembled, gave it about 4 gas baths and got MOST of the oil stains out, Knocked the "Gus" out of it, and blocked and reshaped, and trimmed over an inch off the brim to get rid of the chewed up parts. There was one pretty bad stain at the bottom of the crown body so I threw on a wider Panama hatband and it perfectly hid the stain.

It definately lost some of its sun protection properties during the brim trim, but it turned out as a fun little hat. Always fun to recover something that was destined for the trash bin

Mr Moose had his two week post op checkup today. Thrilled to report that the vet was thrilled with his recovery so far. Incision healing very very well. His gums and tongue are pink again ( they were greyish), he put on a couple pounds the past 7 days. Vet said based on activity level, alertness, and general appearance, that she didnt feel any bloodwork was necessary right now. We go back in 3 months for checkup and lab work. Two weeks ago she said she wasnt sure he would have made it three months.. Well take what we can get! Got home and we had some sausage and eggs... He loved it. Time for lots of attention, treats, good food and his vitamins and supplements.

Moose said to say thanks to all for your thoughts and support to-date..... We really hope to have more positive updates in the future!

So a few weeks ago I received this Mallory with indeterminate staining all over the crown and under the brim. I figured I'd take a flyer on it, because if it could be cleaned up, I'd have a great knock-about hat in a light color felt (which I do not have many of).

Here is the before:

After multiple baths and various cleaning solutions, I now have this that I am wearing today.

So far, I am pleased with my efforts, but I'll probably keep playing around with it.
Nice work cleaning and removing all the stains. What cleaning solution worked the best in this clean up? Color of the "before" pictures looks very different from the "after" pictures too.

The color did change slightly. I did multiple naptha baths that helped, but did not completely remove the staining. Commercial hat cleaning products, likewise, did not really help. As a last resort, I tried a suggestion from an old post here on FL and used a baking soda/water mixture and a nail brush. That did work, but I think it also lightened the overall color of the hat. Since this was always destined to be a knock-around hat, I didn't mind.

Ive worked on a couple light grey and tan hats that were evidently packed full of a coloring powder during finishing. A Resistol was the most packed that Ive had in my hands. It went from black to grey. After a gas bath or two to get the oil stains and ink marks out, the felt is sometimes transformed into a motteled brown or grey. Just something ya gotta be prepared for ....way I look at it, youre adopting a neglected and abused hat to give it a good life.... you gotta love it regardless how it turns out.... thats the rule lol

We made it to Friday!!!!! Going to be a hot one ( weather lady says 99 this afternoon with 80% humidity) Think its a Hemp Stratoliner day. I got the grass mowed yesterday so I have nothing hot or that requires exertion for the rest of the weekend... May be margarita time!!!

As soon as I get back from a coffee and grocery supply run this morning, Mr Moose and I are headed over to his friends at the antique sign store and share his good news and get some donut holes ( they have donuts and sausage rolls friday and saturday and always set a bag of donut holes aside for Moose)

I've had little desire to chase and buy hats in 2025. First, I want to sell a good portion of my collection, and then we'll see.
I'm only tempted by "one-of-a-kind" pieces.
Carlo Sala 7a.jpg

This is an end-of-historical season hat made in Italy.
Carlo Sala Blu 2a.jpg

Carlo Sala, from Monza, is the semi-artisanal hatmaker who made these hats, so "imaginative" by combining high-quality felt with fancy ribbons.
I have another one, not made of the same felt, but with a very similar ribbon.
Carlo Sala etichetta carta.jpg
The label, written in ballpoint pen, says it's "lepre satinè," or satin-finished hare felt.
The midnight blue felt is very beautiful, soft and consistent, and has a remarkable feel.
Carlo Sala Interno.jpg
You can see the interior finish in the photo. The sweatband is made of fabric, and the hat is completely unlined.
The proportions are the classic ones of Italian hats from the 1980s and 1990s.
Carlo Sala Blu 5a.jpg
In my search for pieces "interesting to me," I bought a beautiful antique Tonak, but it's a little too small for my size.
I'll show it to you in the near future.
Have a nice day from an hot Verona
