what do you guys think of this 1940,s tweed suit i won?

Good for a late 50's early 60's look... though ancient history when it comes to what they make today.

Absolutely! Abercrombie & Fitch was a great place for clothes, ***s, and more.


As Matt has indicated, your suit is from the mid 1950s, not the 1940s. (I think BK also mentioned that its union tag probably reads "1949", but was misread as "1940".) It's a classic sack cut, very much along the lines of Brooks Brothers, J. Press, Rogers Peet, Chipp, and other "preppy" clothiers of the time.

Good job! I would immediately unbutton that top button. A&F carried great stuff back in the day. I see Oxxford stuff with A&F tags on ebay all along. I wonder who made your suit.

Leave the rop button done if it looks good. Heck, leave the bottom button done if it looks good on you.

All these rules nowadays... gets in the way of style!

The way the lapel is pulling it looks to me the suit is cut to be a three roll to two. I think the top button is meant to be unbuttoned, and that you'd see a more natural roll.

I'd need to see the edge of the lapel and on what side the button hole is finished to be clearer... otherwise my guess is still three button all functional.

My guess is that the top buttonhole is finished on both sides, so that the lapel can be worn buttoned or rolled. This was commonly found in higher-end sack suits of the time, Brooks Brothers included.

that is a swell suit-
I dont think it was intended to be worn w/top button open, the button stance( gorge) is lower and coat appears to have more waist suppression than Brooks etc.

Speaking of Oxxford, that lapel notch has an Oxxford look about it. I'd love to see some pics of the underside of the lapel, particularly where the lapel buttonhole is, and also of the interior of the trousers.

My dad had some A & F articles too. I will have to ask my mom if she still has any of it. It won't fit me anymore but perhaps I could find homes for them?

Yes, and I've seen sack suits from the '50s, '40s and '30s that had two long and shallow darts, one on each side. This is different from the more fashionable "hourglass" suits of the '30s and '40s, which tended to have four deep darts, two on each side.


I'll post photos tomorrow to show what I mean about those early sack suits and their darts.
