What boots is Austin Butler wearing here?

Hi everyone,

Can anyone identify the boots Austin Butler is wearing in this photo/outfit? I’m really curious about the brand and model — they look great and I’d love to get something similar.

I’m also interested in how comfortable they are. I recently learned this the hard way with Red Wings — several people warned me that a stacked heel can be quite uncomfortable, and that you really shouldn’t buy boots like that blind. So any firsthand experience or comfort feedback would be very helpful.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Comfort is so relative.

If you're expecting for foam midsole running sneakers levels of comfort, no, these won't be that comfortable. But if you're expecting them to be as comfortable as dress shoes, then it's as simple as your mileage will vary.

I would recommend you to see if you can try some boots either at a store or that you can order, try at home and return if you don't like.

Also, this is highly subjective. Some people think footwear break in is a hoax, others swear by it - I personally think even running shoes need break in, let alone boots.

PS: No clue what specific model this dude is wearing, but it seems like somewhat regular service boots.

They look like British DMS Army soles :)

Very much so! I think a lot depends what you're used to as well. After not owning a pair of sneakers for 20 odd years, I borrowed a pair from my Dad when we were clearing out the garage at my parents old house before a move. High end, Addidas something or other with all the running support, but after years of preferring a good brogue I felt desperately uncomfortable in them.

I ran a search on the image and according to the GQ article which featured it here....

"And you just can't wear a grail like that with just any ol' boots – he paired it with some vintage Red Wing Loggers."

Heh, my nemesis I’ve just posted about these boots (a special version of them) and was persuaded not to buy them.

I find Red Wings to be as comfortable as sneakers.

But I don't think those are Loggers he's wearing. They look like Wesco to me.
Wesco makes logger style boots. They look like the redwing loggers because they have a one piece heel, its usually only more expensive stuff that has a leather heel stack. My nicks have a leather heel stack and all the mid range loggers ive seen have a one piece sole.

Mn. The soles look too chunky to be RedWings (albeit they might have been resoled). Hard to know for certain, of course. The GQ scribe could well be right, but I'm wary of trusting that magazine too much, given I recall also seeing them claim Jimmy Dean wore a Harrington in Rebel, and Brando a Schott...

They appear to be Red Wings - Style #2218 - I doubt they are Wesco. I've had both and the Red Wings (2218) were very comfortable to wear with little break-in. Wesco's are far more substantial and expensive with break-in taking a while due to the heavier boot leather but are super comfy once broken in.

The nickel eyelets on Wesco boots are optional (or they were when I ordered mine) whereas they are standard on Red Wings which this image shows. Wesco allows for customization, Red Wing does not - you select your size and that's it.

I assume the image was taken while 'what's his name' was out in public.
