Appreciably warmer here today, but that also means it's very slushy and mucky out there. I dressed accordingly;

Bill Blass blue plaid heavy cotton casual button-down, open neck, crisp white tee underneath (interesting and varied mix of tones in the plaid)
Eddie Bauer straight-leg light denim jeans
Light blue cotton pocket square, puff fold
Vintage trout fly in left lapel
Black jeans belt
Wire-rim glasses, Polo frame (instead of my usual contact lenses)
Swiss Army watch with black band (right wrist)
Polished stainless steel link bracelet (left wrist)
Oatmeal boot socks
Black and tan zip-up winter boots with "spats" effect (Italian make)
Tan wool/cashmere single-breasted topcoat
Brown leather gloves
Lambswool scarf with horizontal stripes in different shades of blue (British make)
David Hanna speckled brown tweed cap (shares enough tonally with the shirt to harmonize well with it)

However, the "big news" today is not my outfit, but an outfit that I saw. When I was at Atlanta Bread Company having my morning coffee and reading Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit, I saw a man dressed in the perfect Green Bay outfit which is also the perfect anti-Fedora Lounge outfit. It took my breath away. If I had been using all my ingenuity to design an outfit calculated to provoke distress in the sartorially sensitive, I couldn't possibly have done a better job. Here it is:

I see outfits akin to this every day (pity me), but this was different. This was negative perfection. At first I just registered "Lousy outfit"; then I began to look closer and realized the truly scintillating level of consistent anti-aesthetic on display. Before I knew it, I was taking notes to capture the moment.

Today I went to a baby shower, and I wore:

Standard double pleats on virtually all my trousers; I'll mention if I ever wear flat-fronts, but it would be unusual for me. Standard cuffs on most of my dress trousers too, although for my last two suits I went with plain bottoms for a change.

An aside on my proportions, since I don't present photographic evidence . I've gotten more substantial as I've aged and worked out. I used to be a thin, railish young fellow at 6'2", 170 lbs, but I beefed up in the weight room, and now, at age 49, I'm 205 lbs and, in matter of suit sizing, a perfect 44 long (I do very well off the rack). The 38 trousers that are standard with 44 suits are just right on me. My inseam is an exact 33. I usually require little in the way of jacket alterations except for a little sleeve lengthening; I have long arms. My shirt size is 16.5/36.

One reason I like "classic style" now (although I always did like it) is that you can age in that style (whether American, Brit, or Euro flavored) and always look good. The slim-cut, flat-front styles I see a lot of at Style Forum, say, look fine on those trim young guys but won't have staying power once they paunch out a bit (as is almost inevitable).

Yes, it's actually a windowpane, although the horizontal stripe is harder to see.

The windowpane on that coat is great, AlanC - it really "makes" the coat.

Most of my clothes are in boxes or bin-liners, so options are few these days.

What a classic. That fabric pattern has been and will be around forever. The hacking pockets are outstanding. I like the Ascot with it. Have you ever worn a wool Challis tie with the suit and shirt combo?
