Really? Both good songs but both of those bands have many more songs that would get my vote before those two. Maybe too much saturation for me and how many Stairway to Heaven themed proms can a person take?

Stairway...still sells over a million copies of sheet music a yr. I find it interesting they both change tempo during the song, which was not common before & maybe have never been done before. Stairway...wins for lyrics; a song about faith & fate I think.

Clearly the lyrics to Freebird were about leaving the relationship, not about dying. But I'm sure the tragedy that was to come has contributed to its popularity.
