It's subtle, but in the background on the right, the brick building has an "uneven" roofline that "dips" and then goes back up and (while hard to tell) it looks like it continues toward the back of the building. While also very hard to tell, the roofline facing the main street appears to also "dip" up and down. I don't know why, but it is a very attractive architectural detail.

^^^ That appears to be a parapet. The roof is probably flat, or nearly so with either roof drains or scupper holes for water to escape. The parapet walls will be from a few inches to 30-36" above the roof. It's very attractive until the drains plug up with leaves or freeze. Then you have a swimming pool on your roof.
I used to take care of a building with a parapet of approximately 30". It was next door to a college bar with a large beer garden. I finally talked the owner into putting large grates over the drains to prevent beer bottles from plugging them. It is scary to walk across a roof 30 feet off the ground with 24" of water on it to extract a bottle from the drain.

Found this image of a landmark sign near my house. It was destroyed by a tornado several years back. The current owners had it redone, albeit with a little modification. The second image shows how it looks today. At least they didn't scrap it entirely, which more often would've been the case.

I wish modern signage were half as cool as this. Nothing better than working action neon.
