W-D Forties, what did your husband use for his DIY? I've been thinking about natural beeswax and petroleum jelly with a little brown food colouring to darken it, but I know there are a lot of possible ingredients (such as some on the HBC site).

Facial hair is tricky for everyone. I think it all depends on how much you consider "right". It takes me about two months to feel like I have enough to start twisting, and six months to be confident in the full look. That's just a start.

You may want to grow the whiskers longer and shave "underneath" part way to create a less bulky mustache. Or, in my case, the last time I had handlebars, I ended up letting them grow almost all the way across my face (in my avatar). In any case, you'll want to have a particular look in mind and then allow at least a few months before you really have enough. And be careful shaving! I know a few slips have set me back weeks!

For wax, I used to use brylcreem (I used it in my hair already) but I prefered straight beeswax because I already make candles from it. [huh]

Nick - he used 60/40 beeswax and vaseline with a litle bay rum for scent. He said it gives a glossy, quite stiff finish (he described it as 'Hercule Poirot'), so good for shaping and holding. He's got a fair sized handlebar, it varies from medium to the size of Undertows avatar. He didn't use any colour in it and made it in a bain marie in the microwave! If you make it 50/50 it will give a more flexible finish. He's pretty happy with it.

I tried a handle bar back in my 20's, I used a wax that cam in a brown stick dispenser like chap stick, but I worked as a cabinet maker in a wood shop and the sawdust stuck to the wax, without the wax I'd either floss my teeth with it or it would bet caught in a beer can pull tab which was quite painful.

I've had a moustache since I was a teenager (a long, long time ago). Could've warned you about the harmonica thing! My initial solution was to start using Hohner Golden Melody harps...but I really didn't like the way they played so I just ended up trimming the stache a little shorter...and playing more carefully.

Hmmm lasts me all day on my stache and provides just enough coloring

Every 'tache is different, and if it works for you, that's grand. Clubman just seems to work less well for more people than other waxes.

Bump. Have grown a mustache for a little over a month now, it's curling down over my lips. Will shave it into a more Pyramid/Pencil shape tomorrow and show you guys the results.

It's like this. I love those small mustaches that guys like Marshall and others wore. They're not Pencil mustaches but they're not Germany's WWII-era leader mustaches either, and yethey aren't full Tom Selleck staches either. A nice balance of shortness and substance.

My first mustache effort

Though I have worn a beard for most of the last 20 years I have yet to ever try a mustache. Since I was going to be Paladin from "Have *** Will Travel" for Halloween I began to grow mine out and shave the rest.

After three trips to different stores and not find a single type of mustache wax I settled for a can of "Murray's Superior Hair dressing Pomade" (though I'm a Dapper Dan man at heart )

Jamie, I've found that an old fashioned curing iron and a hair drier set on low does a much better job of shaping a moustache than a gob of wax.

I do admire you guys who grow mustaches so easily. I have been growing mine for about seven weeks and finally today had to begin waxing it to keep it out of my food. I agree with Hercule Poirot when he said "It is an art, the growing of the mustache! I have sympathy for all who attempt it.”

I wish mine grew so symmetricaly.
I started waxing mine back in the early 80's because one side wanted to grow laterally while the other had a downwards tendency.
Even today, if I skip waxing for more than a couple of days, it reverts to its old, asummetrical form.

I have always been happy with clubman. (silver, green and black tube). It is available here at the local drugstore.
Holds well for me, yet washes out easily. I prefer the neutral colour, rather than anything with tint in it.
