I just polished off a Tanq and tonic, which isn't exactly seasonally appropriate, but I'm low on mixers. In a bit I may try either the single barrel rum I've had for a bit or some of the Bullit bourbon I picked up the other night on the rocks. I've mixed a few drinks with each, but haven't had the chance to fully appreciate their nuances.

Having a Johnnie Walker Black tonight again (trying to save the Lagavulin). Just came in from outside where it's snowing and cold, so very nice sitting inside in the warmth having a scotch before dinner.

I, too, have really been enjoying Shirazes quite a bit. I have sampled a number of them, mostly inexpensive, and I don't think I have come across one that I didn't enjoy at least a little.

I love them Caleb, there's a lot going on in a mouthful of Australian shiraz.

Back home in NZ, there was a widely used rule of thumb, "Aussie reds, Kiwi whites" - in other words you bought Australian red wine and NZ white wine. It's a bit dated now but not a bad rule of thumb.

There's some great drops from my part of the world if you get a chance to try them. Kiwi sauvignon blancs are without doubt in my mind the best SBs iin the world and I'd urge you to give them a go.

Mount *** is my favorite rum too. As for a back-up selection, when a bar doesn't stock Mount ***, I've found that Appleton Estate works well as does Babencourt from Haiti. I've discovered Pyrat brand rum (from the makers of Patron) goes great on the rocks with a squeeze of lime.

How do you drink your Mount ***? I'm partial to 2 oz. of Mount *** Eclipse or Extra Old rum with tonic plus a large wedge of lime, all served up tall in a large pint glass.

I usually enjoy a good cup of coffee's in the evening, a Gevalia or the like, but never without a little addition to make it interesting. Kalua, Nocello, Sambuca are all good additives and don't be cheap with the portion !

Don't normally travel with our sons, both in their thirties, but the stars ( and their wives, both otherwise occupied) were aligned perfectly last fall. We took a five day trip to St. John's Newfoundland and had a few two for one White Russians on George Street. I haven't been able to make one nearly as good at home, so I think it's more about the place and the people that make an exceptional libation.

My brother drinks this, but he and his friends refer to it as *******ual Hill.
It definately is one of the better rums, but isn't nearly as good (IMHO) as Gosling's Black Seal.

Incidentally, I don't believe in adulterating a good rum, just drink it straight out of the glass (or neck if not in polite company). Definately a bad habit I picked up in the army when Her Majesty used to provide a rum ration for soldiers in the field on winter exercise. The drill was to get into the section with the non-drinkers and get their rum rations from them all dumped together in your canteen cup. 6-9oz. of dark rum before breakfast - yum.
