Star Wars Turns 30!

Hard to believe it is 30 years since the release of the first Star Wars movie.
I went with friends while still living back on Long Island. We got to the theater at about 6pm and the crowds were a lot less at dinner time. We had great fun and spent the rest of the night making those light saber noises.

I remember seeing Star Wars at a drive-in theatre. The sound was bad, my family was all packed into a small car and people were walking all over the lot. Probably one of the best times I ever had!!

Saw it at the drive-in my uncle was running at the time -- and to this day I think it was the best movie for drive-ins ever made.

My uncle was one for old-school showmanship, and always went the extra mile in promoting the films he showed. For the local premiere of "Star Wars," he hired a very tall friend of his to dress up in a dyed black bedsheet, a black-spray-painted army helmet, and a gas mask, and stand at the drive-in entrance with a flashlight -- gesturing menacingly at the cars as they drove in. The costume may sound cheesy, but in the gathering dusk of a summer night it looked absolutely convincing, and a lot of thirty-somethings around here have that scene as one of their earliest memories.

Loved that film. I was in my 30's at the time and thought it was too fast-paced, but now it seems just right considering the rapid-fire camera action in today's films.

My favorite actor was in it (Alec Guiness). Being a theatre/literature major, I enjoyed picking out all the archetypal figures in those first three movies.

There was a big celebration last weekend in LA. Did anyone here go?
The post office just released a set of stamps in commemoration. The sheet is beautiful enough to frame.
