Hi
Im new on the forum, so please tell me if this is totally the wrong place to ask

Im looking to buy a Filson Machinaw Vest. From what I find online its still one of the few items Filson makes that actually nice and also made in the US. Im struggling with sizing though. How should I size it to fit over a flannel?

Best Regards

They run small. Go 1 size smaller than you usually buy in s/m/l/xl garments
Got me a little confused, They run small, so I should go smaller? Wouldnt it be go a bit larger? Or am I just stupid hah

What size are you? Number (such as size 44) and letter (such as Large?)
Sounds like you want just a bit of "ease"
I am a "44" and I bought a 44 back when they still offered these in numeric sizes.
It has "just enough" room for layer or two.

Im either an xl or a 2xl, and an eu 54 or 56. depending on what im buying. Chest measurement at slightly more than 47 inches

If the 47" measurement is taken with a flannel/what you plan on wearing the XL will be near perfect. Filson themselves has a good size chart in terms of garment measurement.

I recently tried on their vests in person and with a 37" relaxed 38" expanded chest the XS was too small and the Small was just about the right size.

They run big. I wear large shirts for the most part but I had to size down to a medium for them.

Size XL should be perfect for wearing over a flannel with your chest measurement. For reference a size L is what They used to sell as a size 44 when they had numbered sizes. I believe XL is the same as a size 48.

I've got multiple sizes in multiple colors. The variety is strategic so I can uh, blossom without having to be vest-less.

I bought them all before their marketing shift to the skinny pants beardyman set (not meant to offend skinny pants beardymen). The thing to be aware of is that they're intentionally short waisted such that I always buy the tall version despite not being tall. You should also know that they seem to last forever everywhere but the hem on the left and right sides. Seatbelts and other close proximity stuff chew that hem badly.

Also, check the fabric weight. IIRC the black versions of the vests I have is noticeably thinner and lighter.
