Interesting arrangement for the rear brace/suspender buttons. I am assuming this is related to the breeches being worn whilst sitting on a motorcycle (thus spreading out?) rather than worn whilst standing/walking?

I'm hoping someone that someone is going to jump in with an entire history of that button arrangement.

I've seen similar setups on other military pants, one set meant for suspenders, the other meant for buttoning to a jacket. Not sure if that's the case here, though.

Of course! That makes complete sense. Battledress jackets of the period were designed to be buttoned to the trousers (although I believe it was seldom done in practice).

I'd say those UK army breeches were designed for horse riders, not motorcyclists.

the pattern may have been developed for horse riding, but I believe this style was issued to despatch riders. I believe I have seen them with the original War Department labels indicating them as motorcyle clothing.

I can't ride a motorcycle and don't own a horse, so i don't see myself wearing them.

But, if you want to buy me a horse .....

I've got an old hunting coat that matches those red and black plaid ones, so I'd rock those for sure, especially if I could come up with a matching hat too.

Pre-war they were worn in a general outdoorsy context, not just for riding horses and motorcycles.

Good to hear, indeed they were worn for local and or general purpose, and I am quite serious about doing something with these. They are so flattering and so versatile. I vaguely remember pinching a lime green and chocolate plaid pair and herringbone tweed paid in a workmans store in Tokyo a long time ago. But I do remember wearing a pair in London in the late 80's (at Freuds) and stopping traffic. It was such a delight to see Alex in a pair last month at the meet up.

I have a pleated pair (not vintage) that flare out a little. I like to ride in them! The older breech material feels a lot better than the current fabric.

Here is a photo of Domino and I over the summer! Not exactly the same old style breech but they work great. Wouldn't mind getting an older flared style though. I might get some strange looks at the stables though!
