just bought this Gladstone-type bag, probably 1920s:

the bag has detachable straps which buckle underneath (or can be slipped into the loops on the other side when not used).
not certain of their usage... probably to slip a rolled up blanket or raincoat into:

Herringbonekid: that bad is incredible. The leather is in unbelievable condition for the 1920s. Most of the time, when I see bags from the '20s or '30s, the leather is dried and crack to the point that the bag really isn't usable. Is the leather as good as it looks in the pictures? How is the interior? Enjoy your bag - it is beautiful. FF

yes, the only wear spots to the leather is on the lower corners, but nothing major. the interior has a large mark, but overall not bad:

i can't even imagine what a hand-made bag of this quality would cost today.

Herringbonekid - fantastic, I am very excited for you - that is a great find. Thank you for the interior shot. My guess is a bag of that quality is $1500-$3000 today and that's not handmade. Handmade would make the number a multiple of that.

At the Outlets a couple weeks ago, doing "back to school" shopping for my wife (teacher) I found these at the Allen Edmonds outlet... $375 retail, I think $129 in the outlet... Normally these are a plain leather sole, but this pair was a special order with a rubber overlay (still leather sole, but with a grippy portion).

I thought so! Wearing them for the first time today. Ah the joy of un-broken-in leather sole dress shoes! Wonder how many blisters I'll have tonight!

I went down to the fabric market and picket up a thick suiting fabric that I liked. The lady overcharged me for what is just a cheap wool synthetic blend, but getting pure wool in Vietnam is extremely difficult. So I ended paying $12 for one meter, then I brought it over to one of my tailors who measured me up and made a waistcoat for about $25 labor. Two weeks later, I've got a custom made waistcoat for less than $40 - I probably could have gotten it for cheaper, but reasonable enough.

Sorry about the poor quality pictures, it's a cheap camera in bad lighting, I'll try to get better photos later.

That's pretty slick. Wish we had real tailors in the USA that could do stuff like that for prices like that! Most of our "Tailors" are someone at a dry cleaner that might be able to take up slacks if you're lucky.

There are excellent tailors in the US, who can do whatever you like. But they are not cheap, that's for sure.

Oh I'm aware that they exist, but not "around here" to my knowledge, and furthermore as you confirm, not the type that could produce a vest/waistcoat for <$40
