Hey all!
Although I gave up tobacco almost 18 years ago, i smoked for 25 years before that. Everything from cigs in jr. high and high school (including a lot of roll-your-owns when I was broke) to adding cigars and pipes to my smoking menu in my 20's, I enjoyed tobacco in most every form besides dip. The only time I ever miss it now is occasionall when I smell a good fragrant pipe blend.
But, I am in California, where there are lots of other things to smoke in a pipe. I had been thinking of buying a budget friendly meerschaum to class up my medicinals, so after wembling over a few different ones online I finally ordered a Paykoc mini with a case for 25 bucks. And so, of course that meant that the day after it arrived I found this in a local vintage store while looking for hats.




I couln't find any makers mark on it and no info on the box.
I don't think it is especially old, nor a really high-end piece, but still it's a nice job on the carving. And that sultan l9oks like he has a bit of attitude!
I wonder if it will color like it would with tobacco. I guess I'll find out!

In an ongoing effort to class up my stash, I picked up this Calabresi, a division of Tom Cristiano's pipe company, at a local vintage shop. After a quick beeswax and mineral oil polish.




I paid a little more than eBay says it's worth but none of the ones I saw were quite as cool as this one. It's not my preferred style, but I like, a, little variety.

I found this Ropp "Toulon" earlier the, same day that I found the Sultan meerschaum. It was barely used, and had not been used for long enough that there was no smoky smell left, just a sweet mellow aroma that reminded me of the Black Cavendish I used to like so much.




It turnedout that the bowl was much more voluminous that I was thinking when I bought it. At California priced it would take about 50 dollars to fill it from a dispensary. Probably 60 at a tobacconist... . So I decided to give it a makeover.
I first sawed the top off of the bowl, sanded it smooth and had this.




It served the purpose of making it more economical to use, but no matter how, I looked at it just looked like a sawed-off billiard. Although I had wanted to keep the original finish, I decided eventually to just go for a whole new look and went to town on it with the sandpaper.

I envisioned an apple as I went after that sawed-off briar bowl, but ended up with something that more resembles an acorn. Much better eye and hand appeal. I sanded it to a 10,000 grit finish, then polished it with a homemade mineral oil, beeswax and carnauba wax mixture. I then used the6000-10,000 grits with a little mineral oil to polish the vulcanite stem.




The results were better than I had hoped for. The pipe smokes reaaly well. The only thing I don't like, about it is the metal on metal joint, which doesn't hold as tight as I'd like. Especially after I polished the tenon to a nice smooth state... . I ended up scuffing it up some with coarse sandpaper to make it stick better.
All in all, a fun projectwith favorable results.

Actually got a new Vauen Intro 4 (from starter kit). It's similar to the Vauen Classic series.
But I'm letting it rest for a while. We will see, how the weather will evolve the next weeks. But I'm looking forward to it!

Grabbed this Jean Claude pipe for 35 bucks, because I finally wanted to give them a try. Sure they are cheap, but this one was one of the few, which are kind of B+ quality and altogether "okay", for my taste.

And especially this one has a nice bigger filling volume between middle and big! Can't wait to fire it, I tell you!!

Went to smoke with my father yesterday and he pulled out this Peterson house pipe. Completely dirty! In the first pic you cannot even tell the band is silver due to tarnish.
Of course, I took it home to clean up for him. It drives me nuts that he has several high end pipes that he does not take care of. Anyway, a work in progress.

Boy, let me tell you! My new one is a top-smoker.
With it's bigger filling volume, it gave me 45 minutes of pure joy!

For whatever reason, it ran better than my two Vauen.

And the funny thing is, that this Jean Claude pipe is just named "Brown".
