Ever seen a pocket like this before?

looks like some pockets you see from late teens - early 20s jackets.

The early 1930s style is peerless in my opinion. The outfit on the left is in such perfect harmony. Love it!

i like the look of the wide flecky trousers on the chap next to Fred in the first photo.

Astaire's DB on the first pic is wonderful, but the diamond weave suit on the left eclipses him.
Also the combination of the fellow to the left on the second photo is a perfect balance of elegant and casual.
Alas the boater and flower IMO make Astaire look slightly "goofy".

I think a link button on a sport coat looks peculiar. A bit too formal.

Patrick, I don't think the single link button is too formal... true it is often found on tuxedo jackets, but I think it rather makes it playful and relaxed.
It was not unusual on European sportcoats/suits:

Metatron, the sportcoat combination on this Romanian photo is simply wonderful. I would also prefer it without the scalloped stitching on the pockets, though.

I have to wonder about the pins/badges on both lapels though!

I'd assumed link buttons were exclusively reserved for dinner jackets. Oh well. Another "rule" savaged by the diversity of sartorial history.

You see them on 3-piece suits, especially in the '30s I believe. It also may have been more of a European thing, at least that's where I've seen them most.
