Very interesting Dave! Nome had to be miserable in the winter. Soapy Smith would have been in Skagway at the time.My cousin Charles Ellsworth Hoxsie (1862-1930)
Great family history, Dave.My cousin Charles Ellsworth Hoxsie (1862-1930) traveled from Charlestown Rhode Island across the US in the late 19th century. Abandoned his wife in Wyoming
,spent some time as a Sherrif in Lincoln Nebraska to Portland OR to Washington, eventually settling in Nome Alaska where he sat on its first Town Council, operated multiple saloons including the Dexter where he and his partner Wyatt Earp ran high-stakes poker games downstairs and prostitutes upstairs. He was involved with all aspects of Nomes shady business including rum-running on two converted gas tanker boats. Generally one step ahead of the law, his luck ran when Prohibition finally caught up to him and he spent 2 of his last 3 years in Federal prison for violations of the Volstead Act.
