I think that until the 50's alot of adult men in the US did not wear shorts very much. In the tropics there was more of a shorts culture and as people were able to go to such places on vacation began bringing that culture back with them.

I don't know the begining of it but I recall the fashion of Madras shorts being the thing to have.

Out this way with the heat, shorts are seen as work pants for outdoors and non-a/c warehuse workers. UPS, Fed EX and US Postal delivery positions do shorts in warm weather. Utility, BDU type and Hiking shorts are prevalent here with cut offs (old jeans cut down) in the more rural areas.

Do they still have the signs at the public pools: No Cut Off Jeans in the Pool!

Something I've noticed about some people who've moved to Florida is that there are men never changed their habits from when they lived up north. I can count on one hand the number of times my father-in-law has worn shorts. He's originally from Maryland, and even though he's lived in Florida for fifty years, he never, ever wears shorts.

Another guayabera owner here. I'm wearing my white one now and it's more than paid for itself since I bought it five years ago. Not bad for $17.99! I have several of the traditional, emnroidered, short sleeve guayaberas and would wear colors like aqua, pink--uh, I mean "coral"--but they just aren't sold in the more interesting colors. I may have to go custom made for those, but machismo being what it is, I may get some strange looks.

Sidebar on Color: I worked in a department store years ago and noticed that most men would not wear colors outside of black or navy blue neckties; it's as though they were afraid of light colors because others would see them as less than many if they wore anything but dark colors!

I guess that I must have been born with a Caribbean soul because I not only couldn't wait to move down here full-time, but was also more than happy to ditch the northern attire.

I tend to alternate between the classic safari/bush attire and the classic beach bum outfit...of course that's also because I live the life of both.

Most people do just fine! It's just bizarre when they're never truly comfortable in this environment.

I have several guayaberas which i wear during the summer, along with shirts of that type.

At work we have these silly short sleeve labcoats that look ridiculous with a long sleeve shirt underneath so i wear them with short sleeve shirt and tie. I try to look at it as the falling down look, since i usually go with pocket protector and all, but thats only at work.

I just graduated today, so i am going to be receiving quite a bit of graduation money, a portion of which i'd like to put towards a white linen suit for the summer. I was looking at this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=200325517746 in particular, does anyone have any opinion, cotton/linen mixes are worse than pure linen or pure cotton?

My guayaberas and shirts are generally on the cheaper side, although i may eventually go for a more expensive guayabera in the future, i saw Raul Castro at May day celebrations wearing one that looked pretty sweet. I'll post some photos of what i have when opportunity arises.

I wear the inexpensive JC Penny guayaberas, but since they only come in a few different colors, I'm going down to Little Havana and getting one custom made, perhaps for my birthday in August.

For those who live in the UK, Sainsbury's TU Clothing line for the Summer 2009 season includes some rather nice all-cotton (and cotton-linen blend), short-sleeve shirts. I bought three at the weekend in different wide-check patterns, with a distinctly 50s-vibe to them. Great for casual wear. Actually, I recently purchased quite a few long sleeve cotton shirts from Sainsburys too - we'll see how they last over time, but to date the only thing on which I can really fault them is the lack of a double cuff (barrel cuffs only, with no second button hole for wearing with cufflinks).

Just came back from the Dominican Republic where along the Conde I did purchase a Guayabera shirt. 100% Linen made in Italy by Fariani. I opted for the color "Sky".

You can't go wrong with a good ol' fashioned Camp shirt. With Camp, I mean the cut. They usually have a button loop, one or two chest pockets, and cut square at the bottom to just hang over your waistline.

Most 50's and 60's shirts are simple camp shirts made plain or with some sort of print and or pattern.

I have found TONS and TONS of vintage men's short sleeved shirts (including Guayabera shirts) at thrift stores. So many my boyfriend told me to stop bringing them home. Go check your local thrifts!
