Darcy is the way to go. I have one and love it. Go with the extra tall wing collar, too. My only complaint is that the sleeves are about an inch or so too short, and I am a little guy!

I wish they made a two stud shirt for white tie, but this is as good as we can hope for in 2013.

I've got both Darcy and Luxire evening shirts. The only difference is the Luxires are made to my measurements. I did have the Darcy shirt sleeves shortened and I use Darcy's collars with both shirts.

Depending on your shirt size, you might have success with vintage on eBay or other online sources. I took some time searching and patiently waiting, but I was able to collect two circa 1920 formal shirts--one I use for white-tie and one for black-tie--and a white-tie waistcoat and matching tie. Now I'm looking for a tall wingtip collar because the one I have is a little short at 1.5".

If you do go the vintage route, I recommend being very specific with sellers about any damage, the fabric's condition, and whether the shirt is starched. I purchased a circa 1910 formal shirt off eBay that was advertised as being in like-new condition, still in the launderer's dated wax paper bag. After my prompting, the seller ensured me that the shirt was not starched and that the fabric was in excellent condition, but what I received was a beautiful shirt with a stiff starch that had helped (along with moths) to crumble the shirt into pieces when I removed it from the packaging. I received a refund, but at only $10 it was worth the gamble if I hadn't.

I only ordered soft folded collars from Luxire to use with daywear shirts. I was disappointed that the collars were exactly the same size as the shirt neckbands, making it difficult to attach.

This is not entirely relevant, but what shoes do you where with white tie. I am not anxious to by pumps but am curious if that is what is normally done. I never noticed bows on Fred Astaire's shoes burlap never looked that closely. From what I already own I could go with patent leather lace ups or standard black oxfords. What do you fellow classic menswear enthusiasts don?

You might take a look at the formal primer thread HERE to answer your questions. According to the thread, patent leather pumps are the most formal. I wear a pair of Allen Edmonds patent leather oxfords for both white and black tie. If anyone got down low enough to stare at my shoes and then was pompous enough to comment, he'd look like a bigger fool than me having laces.
