Hi all,

Hope you're all enjoying a good weekend.

Now that the tariffs are being exacted and Buyee is automatically adding 20% to the order price to cover tariffs when you check out I can't imagine it not putting a real slowdown on shopping there.

If a jacket languishes on Buyee or Mercari, Rakuten or whatever - and if you visit frequently enough you know what I mean, some of them tend to really hang around for a while - then to me that means that neither the local market is interested in it at that price or condition, and the international market isn't either.

Now with an additional 20% being preemptively charged by Buyee for the tariff into the US I wonder how much of a mark that's going to leave. Clearly the local market wasn't interested enough to snap it up, and now the U.S. consumers are going to likely be priced out of it.

Honestly less fun.

Yep pretty brutal on top of the de minimis removal. Yen is also slightly up relative to before.

Feel like the good times of Japanese deals are pretty much over.

Brutal is right - the new 20% charge is $100 USD for every $500 spent plus shipping. And all but two of the shipping options have been discontinued and each of those has a separate charge that gets added to the shipping fee and tariff charge.

I wonder if that means Buyee will issue more 15% coupons or items will go on sale? If not, I can't see U.S. buyers participating like before.

Somewhat related, but I’ve also seen the shipping costs from Japan/Europe on Ebay fly up to ~40% of the item’s price on some items.

I did a hoorah from Japan before this whole fiasco started.

Now, the tariffs and shipping fees pretty much put me on the sidelines for a long while.

And i think the whole market will slow down. Buyee is just piling on top of the EU shipping halt.

Likewise; I front-loaded about 3 months worth of my clothing budget, and am planning on my next Japan related purchase to be during my trip next year.

FJ used to do the 'declared value' once as an exception and then not again. The risk is on them insurance wise when they say a package is lower value than it is. Plus, illegal and all.

'Gift' does not do anything.

I've had duty on every shipment over de minimis (which is now ended) I received from them, regardless of what shipping option I used.

What you could have done since it's MIUSA, is wait to ship it and contact their customer service and ask them to specifically declare it.

@cbez you're right - this is a leather jacket forum - my only intention in starting the thread was to say that Buyee has preemptively begun assessing a 20% tariff levy at the time of paying for shipping, and that it amounts to a noticeable increase in the overall cost.

My wonder now is whether or not jackets already in the U.S. and listed on eBay will now go up in price given the new constraints on supply and demand.

Maybe myopic of me but I get the sense that the Japanese market was largely a haven for smaller sized guys like me to snag some crazy deals.

If you were a 42, or already very well served by US stock patterns you probably weren't getting much use out of it anyway. I can't imagine it affecting broader prices much.

There should be a spike in imported new jacket prices though, which were already pretty expensive with existing tariffs and the importing shop taking a cut.

@cbez I too am on the smaller size - I'm a 36 almost across the board and had an eye opening experience just yesterday, which is what prompted this post.

I purchased a jacket last week with an 18% off coupon, which was a pretty great deal. By the time the jacket got to the Buyee warehouse it was too late to ship and miss the end of de minis - I ended up paying $257 for tariff + shipping + shipper fee.

My terrific deal kinda faded away at that point. I think to make it worthwhile you'd need an outstanding deal to counteract the tariff.

There were deals for the bigger boys like myself, but you had to hunt for them. It was always a gamble too because they rarely include measurement pics.

I got a nice Aero Grizzly last year for a pittance in a size 44.

Do you mind sharing the price on the jacket to come to that much tariff fee?

I would drive me crazy with the much added cost.

This is why I went on a shopping binge this past month and had my final box arrive last week, including grail level jacket and denim that I had been watching for months. Figured now or never because the opportunity probably wasn't going to present itself again.

With these recent changes I don't anticipate continuing to use the service going forward. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I completely transformed my wardrobe over the past year thanks to Buyee and the (second-hand) Japanese market. On the other, I can now focus on enjoying what I managed to get instead of searching for the next hit.

Let's stay away from politics. Hard to do give the nature of the thread. But let's try. Otherwise, I will have to shut it down.
@Peacoat appreciate the thought - this absolutely wasn't meant to be a political post, rather just an expression of the actual cost of doing business into the US as of Friday from Japan.
