Role Model?

Ladies, I'm curious! Who would you say is your most serious role model? I'd love to hear about someone you'd like to emulate, and why.

My grandmother, more than anyone else -- a Depression-era housewife who raised two kids on practically nothing and refused to let anything get in the way. She went on to run a business with my grandfather for thirty-seven years, put up with five demanding grandchildren and practically raised me -- there isn't a day goes by that I don't apply some bit of knowledge she passed on to me. She also played the ukulele, made a mean pie crust, lived and died with the Red Sox, and *always* voted.

In all those things I've followed her example. Except the ukulele thing, and I keep meaning to work on that.

My role model is my grandmother as well (though LizzieMaine's sounds like a peach)

She worked her whole life, she was smart, well-read, and funny as hell. Nobody could tell a dirty joke like her. At the same time, she had class. She got along with everybody and everybody knew her. She was never shy, never a downer.

And she was always in motion. She was so lively and fun.

She never considered herself old. After she retired from her career, she got a different job at the Y so she could keep doing stuff and keep working out, too.

She lost my grandfather when I was 3, after 35 years of marriage, and after a time of mourning she went on with her life and found a 2nd wonderful man, and she told me she knew she was blessed because she was able to find real love twice without those men being anything alike.

She wasn't in any sense a fearless woman but she was a strong woman, and I would be proud to be like her.

My Dad. He is a self-made, successful businessman who has remained humble and decent. He has a genuine curiosity and love of life that I so admire.

After thinking about this, I think I would say my dad is my role model. He was a very strong person who stood in the face of a lot of adversity and triumphed. With the odds against him if he had not accomplished much of anything, no one would have thought ill of him but, he worked hard doing jobs I wouldn't even think about considering (and thanks to him I don't have to). Coming from nothing, he accomplished what many people with more means were unable to. And, so many people loved him because he was friendly, wise and gave great advice. When he passed, we had to have two funerals and they were both standing room only.

I suppose Malcolm X is my greatest role model. His evolution was amazing, and along the way no one was able to persuade him to give up his views or sell out. I like people that fight unpopular battles and win.

Mine also is my Granny, without a moment's hesitation. I lost her just 3 years ago this month. Born in 1913 she was the second oldest of 12 children and was like their second mother doing most of the washing, ironing and cleaning since she was a child. She met my Grandfather when she was 15. They were married in the early 30's and had 3 children. She never complained about anything, and took care of everyone before herself. She was the most giving and unselfish woman I have ever known. My Mom was a single Mom from the time I was 3 and we spent all our time with my Grandparents. My Grandmother taught me everything I know about cooking, baking, cleaning etc. A day doesn't go by that I don't think of her and always strive to do as she would do. I miss her terribly.

Gosh, you look so much like her! And I want to play the ukulele in the future, too.

Most people choose someone in their family for role models, but I would probably say someone who most people have never heard of and probably wouldn't be a top pick even if they did know them. Maybe Kay Francis, Myrna Loy, or another early actress full of personality because I'm just scandalous like that.

So many role models--who to choose?

Well, I guess I see both of my parents are my role models. Strong capable people who face the days' battles with a smile and a resolve to think beyond themselves.

But vintage wise--I really get a kick out of Rosalind Russell. Smart savvy. All of her characters were strong smart ***y women. Oooh and the clothes!
