Ike Turner was a pivotal figure in RnB music.

In 1951, what was later described as "The first Rock n Roll record", "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston & his Delta Cats was recorded in Memphis.

In fact, the band didn't exist. It was actually, Ike Turner & his Kings Of Rythm. Saxophonist Brenston did the vocals, but 19 year old Ike was the leader of the band.

A little later, he teamed up with Annie May Bullock and went out as Ike & Tina Turner.

The old Frankie Ford number, "Sea Cruise", from 1959, is a classic.

It was, however, originally recorded by Huey "Piano" Smith, the guy who wrote it.

Unfortunately, the record company didn't think much of the vocal, so they erased it, and put Mr Ford onto Huey's backing track.

As they say, that's showbiz..

First time on this thread. I love music but can't sing, play an instrument or dance....have no "ear" for music.

I Like all types of music....as I have gotten older of course oldies (50s-60s) are my favorite now.

I've always liked this song....can't be sad or unhappy while it's playing. If your tired...it will perk you up.
Never heard the Huey Smith version before now....but, here's my unprofessional take on the 2 versions. I think Huey is a better singer than Frankie. But, I like Frankie's version better. I think the reason it sounds better to me is because Huey IS singing better and it calls for a slower tempo. Frankie, while not singing as well is "getting" the song and brings out the best in the song's words, arrangement and just doing the song as it should be. Don't know if that makes any sense.

I do like both versions. But, Frankie's is a better version of this song ....to me anyway.

That makes 2 more versions of Sea Cruise I never heard before.

Liked the Johnny Rivers version, not so much with Jerry Lee Lewis.

Rivers could do a variety of song types well. Jerry Lee is well......Jerry Lee.

Still think Frankie has the edge on this song.

Here's another guy who tends to get forgotten, these days, due to cover versions.

Bobby Freeman had his first hit in 1958, with "Do You Want To Dance", produced by Sylvester Stewart, who would later become Sly Stone.

This was covered in the US by the Beach Boys, and in the UK by Cliff Richard & the Shadows, and many folks now remember the covers rather than the original.

I have only seen Solomon Burke's name mentioned once so far. One of my favorite all time singers. Maybe even the greatest male soul singer of all time. Even into his late 60's could put on a better show sitting down than most entertainers could moving all over the stage.

I believe his weight held him back in a time when looks were beginning to become a big part in selling of singers and bands. I can still listen to his music for hours.
