My new 'Olney' Scout hat.

The more I look at this, the more I like it. I've also noted the brand name Olney, has some fairly nice looking summer Panama hats with a nice wide brim.

Olney's Panamas aren't bad, but they're relatively low-grade cuencas (I've got one and being UK based have tried most of them on)

They sure do look nice even if they are not top shelf Panama hats. One part of a consideration regarding a summer time hat also is, if a hat is weaved tightly how much heat stays inside the hat?

From what Olney offers seems to be well made, not going to fall apart, am I right on that? Prices are sure reasonable as well.

A enigmatic mystery cloaks my brow today: It is a hat that I inherited from my Dad, who died 2 ½ years ago, but one that I only discovered late last night. I am meeting with a friend for today and told him I would bring a crate of hats that fit my Dad but not me. He has a larger head than most and we’ll see which ones fit him and that he would like to own.

I found that crate (mostly Stetson Panama hats) in the garage last night around 9:30 p.m. after getting back from work. Then I found another, one that I had seen before. It looked to be full of ball caps. But under them were treasures – three fancy cowboy Stetsons and two fedoras, basically identical to each other.

The one I chose to wear today is a black soft fedora: 4 ¾ in. crown, 2 ¼ in brim. The brim is stitched, not raw. The hatband is ¾ in., made of the same material and has a bronze accent button marked CUEPIRA 1855. Above those words is a capital C in a rectangle.

It has a cloth sweatband and is marked size 60. On it are the words Cashmere-Fell, Made in Italy. It is lined. At the top of the hat on the lining is a logo -- a gold sheep/goat with the words underneath – Cashmere-Fell.

In the cold, hard light of day, I see it needs a brushing. I prefer to do that in sunlight so you can see the dust really fly off. I use a boar bristle brush (counter-clockwise strokes, of course).

I really like it and I know I did not pack that crate. Oh well. I took out the cowboy hats and will see if they fit my friend’s head and or fancy at lunchtime.

Anybody know anything about this hat's manufacturer? Because my Dad bought it, I presume it came from JJ Hatter in NYC within the past 5-6 years.

I'm perfectly happy with mine for the price - they're pretty average cuencas - the odd mis-weave but solid enough. I'm not very fussy about panamas though, and don't have any experience with the dear fine weaves...

Didn't know there was a "sweet liners" thread. I can certainly post it there. Probably post it on the Dobbs Diner as well. I don't know what size you wear Joao but I have a 7 1/2" Pan American with a Gus crown fror sale in the classifieds that has a 4" brim.

It's too big. My size is 7 1/4 - 7 3/8. It needs a lot of padding and still wants to fly away.

Nice hat. I have a couple that I'm hoping to make one good one of. They had a trout fly as the feather when new. Mine are shorter brims, sadly, but the heather finish seems to be characteristic.

I took one last look, and now wonder about the handwritten word just above the logo inside the hat. Does it say what I think it says? Was that the price you paid?!
