Portis Super-Lux

I really like this old Super-Lux. Felt is lightweight but firm, and of a lovely shade of grey with a distinct lavender undertone. The unreeded sweat is textured, not unlike some Dobbs sweats from the '30s and early '40s. The sweatband sewing and ribbon work is very well done.


Crown: 4-3/4" as I have it currently creased.
Ribbon: 1-1/8". Very dark grey with just a hint of blue.
Brim: 2-5/8", raw edge.
Sweatband: 1-7/8".

Here's a Portis Super-Lux that I recently acquired.

The hat is in really nice shape and an interesting felt colour that seems to be a combination of Silverbelly, light grey and light brown. The typically cool ribbon is a greenish grey.

The brim is 2 1/2 inches wide and the open crown would be about 5 3/4 - nice dimensions.

Would you believe it? Another Portis!

This one is a nice soft grey felt and the ribbon has enough lilac to send Aureliano rushing for the scissors

The hat had been sent to Optimo to be cleaned, blocked and have the sweatband replaced, must have been in bad shape because there are still some marks in the felt. The eBay seller was kind enough to include the original sweatband with the shipment.

The brim size is the standard 2 1/2 inches and the crown is a little low, I'd estimate just a tad over 5 inches, open.

I've been wearing this Portis a lot over the last couple of days. I really like the funky ribbon colours and it is super comfortable.

Scored my first bowler, and it's a Portis. I'm surprised how comfy it is! I might become a fan of these lids. Hope it doesn't look too goofy.

David: I love your wonderful new Portis pair. Portis made some very nice lids employing some very distinctive ribbon work. Unfortunately, it seems that, more than any other maker, nearly every Portis one comes across is of diminutive size.


Randall: You are a natural at wearing the Derby. That Portis looks terrific on you. Please post some detail photos of the hat when you have the opportunity.
